Question Enermax Revolution 85+ with New Build?

Hello Guys,

I have a very old Enermax revolution 85+ Power supply and i am hoping that i can use it for my new build which will be risen 9 3900x with x570 mobo. Do i or should i need to upgrade my power supply or will it work with newer build?

Thank you.

How old is "very old". More than 10 years, is really pushing it, even for a "good quality" PSU. Their capacity for power output degrades over time, and the Ryzen R9 3900X does take a decent amount of power.

I KNOW PSU prices SUCK right now, but... you might have to suck up, and buy another one.

You could probably try your old one, though. Maybe some of the other old-timers will comment.

My personal philosophy on PSUs and HDDs, is to mostly, pro-actively replace them after so many years (or the warranty runs out). I haven't done that for the HDDs in my NAS units, because they're running in RAID-5, and were shucked, so there's not really any warranty to worry about. But if they slow way down, and act funny, then I'll replace them regardless. In a client PC, I replace HDDs every 5 years or so, and PSUs every 3-5 years, depending on quality, or when the warranty runs out, whichever is longer. (Some PSUs are really high-quality, and are warranted for 10-12 years of operation.)

Based on google it seems like those were 850w and higher and were high quality psus back in 2010. If it works, use it. If you're planning on significantly overclocking it, you might need a newer psu with 8+4 pin cpu, though. 8 pin maxes out at 235w and the 3900x uses up to ~150w stock. Not sure if you'll find any 8+4 pin cables from enermax for a psu that old?

I'm still running a corsair vx450 w/ i7 860 from around 2010, though I'm planning a completely new build when am5 hits.

I have some spare psus lying around though in case one my psus die.
