Enermax Noisetaker vs. Seasonic

Help me pick a PSU here. It's either going to be the Seasonic Super Silencer 460W/Super Tornado 400W or the Enermax Noisetaker 485W.

The upside to the Seasonic is better quality and probably quieter operation. The downside is low amps on the 12V rail around 22A - 24A.

The upside to the Enermax is that it has two 12V rails with 18A each and a combined 32A when maxed out.

Anyone have any experience with either one of these?

I have the Seasonic Super Tornado 400W. It is very quiet and works well for my system of modest energy requirements and modest overclocking. I wanted a quiet PSU and this one certainly fills the bill.

i bought the Enermax Noisetaker 485W last week and have been using it since this past weekend.

I find this unit to be extremely quiet.

On the back of the unit there is the adjustable fan settings.

If you leave it on AUTO the fans seem to spin just enough to cool the unit without noise.

I have mine set to Highest fan speed and its still very very quiet.

for the price I would also throw in the OCZ Powerstream 420/470/520

I got a 520w and can not hear it over my MAd Dog Whisper quiet fans...27cfm at 22db

FYI: when i read several reviews on the Noisetaker they said changing the fan speed in the rear does nothing unless the load is a certain amount if I recall correctly..thats why I think the fan speed sounds essentially the same no matter the rear switch

Has anyone compared the noise from both of these power supplies?

I'm looking for a new PSU after my Antec broke. My power requirements aren't that great and I just want the quiestest power supply at a reasonable price.

seasonic runs the most quiet runs the coolest too. 80 % efficiency. the ocz 520 has a 63% efficiency that will most likely even drop some more cuz you wont put enough load on it anyway.

I think I'll go with Seasonic. Their power ratings are actually legit, which is more than you can say for most other companies. The 460W is rated 25A on +12V, but it can probably put out 30A+ quite easily.

SPCR also did a test where they fluctuated voltage input over a wide range and Seasonic had no problem coping while other unnamed PSUs died or even blew up. That's a sign of quality.

I am sorry if you look at the silentpcreview that seems to one of the best on the net for PSU's..the OCZ powerstream is at min 70% efficient and reaches 80%...now I realize this is a 470w unit and not the 520w...but it seems everyone is making assumptions that along a product line this is equal...

they did test a Seasonic 400w not the 460w....it was an excellent unit best efficiency and very low noise(not much better than OCZ especially when you note as load increase the OCZ changes a small amount and the quieter units ramp up in sound)

Thermalrock's father..did test a Seasonic vs OCZ 520w..not sure how old each was..I know the OCZ 520w at least the one I bought in last few weeks even has newer connectors on the unit...so I assume they may tweak there units over time as most companies do...

The Seasonic is very good...no doubt but I am tired of seeing people posting data that's not true or at substantiated with data to back it up...no way you can say the Seasonic unit puts out 30A on the 12v rail..I looked for any review that showed the "real amps on a rail" and I could not find one....

I was a big fan of Antec until I got a OCZ 520w...I just got a 480w TruePower back in RMA brand new...it seems to run hotter with a lower voltage performce than my 2 yr old unit TruePower that died

I want to point out I am not saying OCZ is better than Seasonic...I would have gone with a Seasonic if they would have had 30A on the 12v....since this seems to be important for future upgrades..25A was less than my Antec and I was concerned...whether 25A is ok(or if the Seasonic puts out more great but no one could prove this with numbers)

Yes thermalrock I know you dad feels the Seasonics were putting out "70w or so" more than there rating ....but I still needed to see the data to know for sure...not to mention I saw your info after I ordered my OCZ...may have changed my mind ...but oh well

Anyway this is my 2 cents

Just report facts and if you are not sure do not report a number like it is gospel...I make mistakes and will admit

well if you are tired of ppl posting false data then take a look at the ocz site where they say that the efficiency of the powerstreams is ~63. i dont think they would make their own product's efficiency that much worse than it actually is.

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/PSUSpec.pdf

this is from the official ocz site so i guess it counts as credible? and it states that the 470 has 63% efficiency, the 520 too, and the 600 70%. hope this helps.

ps i never said the powerstream was bad its a great psu and you definitely bought one of the better psus on the market. (i bought one too and im not dissappointed.)

Thermalrock..if you recall before I never doubted you or your father's post but I do think OCZ has changed the unit a bit(at least in the connectors there are providing on the newer units...have then done anything else who knows)

As for the effeciency issue...I was reporting OCZ values...in fact I have to admit I was stupid enough not to check there site...but it appears if you believe silentpcreview and for at least comparison sake most are using them as a source...it looks like OCZ is underreporting there perfromance...like Seasonic does
about wattage

Now if silentpcreview is making an error fine but at least I am trying to use there results for consistency...

anyway my apologies for my ignorance of OCZ website reports😱...I guess I need to sheepishly more on....

nono i didnt feel offended i was just linking that so you know i didnt male those numbers up either. if the ocz does better than they claim thats awesome. would only be a problem if they did worse than the specs promise.
also i meant to say i didnt think they would make.... not i dont think. as in before you posted any info how it performs i just quoted ocz without questioning their numbers cuz their claims dont seem outragiously high. 63% isnt that hard to do 🙂. if they really hit anything near the seasonics ~80% that is a very nice efficiency. good psu.
anyway just wanted tomake sure you know i didnt make the numbers i gave up myself 😛

I do wish someone would put out a review that shows the actual amp voltage for the OCZ and Seasonics

At any rate, many people are running some pretty hefty rigs off of average 350W PSUs (60% eff. at 200-250W), so quality PSUs like Seasonic, OCZ, Enermax, PCP&C (70-80% eff.), running 400-500W won't have any trouble unless you have 6 HDs, SLI, and dual cores.

Resistance to line fluctuation is important to me because I'll be moving to a place where brownouts are very likely. I may even have to consider getting a UPS.
