Enermax 465P-VE: How do they arrive at a 431 watt rating?

I just looked at the specs on this supply and they are as follows:

38A @ +3.3V
2.2A @ +5Vsb
44A @ +5V
2A @ -5V
20A @ +12V

Are these specs wrong? How do they get 431 watts out of this?

If you do a simple P= I*E calculation for each voltage then sum it you get over 600W, but the 5V sb may be part of the main 5V supply so should not be counted. Even so that wattage is well over 430W which implies that there are other limitations which forbid you from drawing max current from all voltages simutanously. I can see no problem with those numbers.

I still don't know how any current motherboard could have problems with the +5V rail on this supply...even if all the other rails were being heavily taxed. I'm refering to the Epox 8KHA+ mainly.

I want to purchase the Epox board but wish to understand why some people had or are having problems with the Enermax supplies and the 8KHA+.

This is a horrible power supply. I don't recommend anyone getting it. Because of this I am running a 1.4 Tbird@1.2 :( I have tried it on 4 motherboards, and 2 different 1.4 Tbirds, a 1.33 Tbird and a 1.0 Tbird. Anything past 1.2 results in instabilites.

Die Enermax. And at one time everyone was recommending them :(

<< This is a horrible power supply. >>

It works great for me. Seems to be built like a tank, it's quiet, works fine with my fully loaded 1.4 GHz tbird setup. EVERY review of this power supply is a rave about how good it is. I've seen no hint of a problem with mine and every post I've seen (maybe 3 posts) that says it sucks has no back up for their statement - no measurements, no nothing. Just like Kurupshin. With all those parts he has and who knows what kind of care in their handling it's not likely the power supply is his problem, unless it's defective - and even Rolls Royce occasionally has a defect.

As far as how 431W is determined, power in an AC circuit is not as simple as P=I*E. PIE only works for very simple DC cicuits. With AC, PIE only gives you a VA rating, like UPS's use. For AC power, the reactance of the load (resistance + capacitance + inductance, including their phase angles) can play a huge role in the power delivered.

I think the problem is really only with certain Epox mobo's that don't use the +3.3v rail.
Anyway, I'm waiting for my Enermax EG651P-VE to arrive.:) I can't wait to toss that bad boy in my system.

So some boards are tying the +5 V rail to both 5V and 3.3V regulators on the mobo? Why in the &%$# would they do that?

I got this PSU and its great. Its powering the following without any hiccups.

AMD 1.4Ghz @ 1.4Ghz
ASUS A7A266 Mobo
512MB DDR Crucial
Voodoo 5 AGP 64MB<----needs extra power
Plextor SCSI CDRW 12x4x32
Plextor SCSI 40Max CD-ROM
Adaptec AHA2490U2W SCSI controller card
3Com NIC w/ 3PX Processor
Toshiba 10X/40X SCSI DVD-ROM
IBM 36gig LZX 10,000 RPM U160 LVD SCSI HD
WD 18gig Enterprise 10,000 RPM U160 LVD SCSI HD
SB Platinum w/ Live Drive
Floppy disk
6ea 80mm Panaflo Case Fans
Enermax 465-VE(FC)

Ever Since I changed to this PSU things had been super stable <----- never did crashed, not even once.
**note: If your system takes more wattage than mines I doubt it.

I certainly hope there's no problems with the Enermax EG465P-VE. I've got one on the way from Newegg, and it's already arrived in Phoenix. :Q Not that I take one person's word as gospel. I seem to be able to make things work when others shout in frustration.

This PS is Da Schiz Nit! If you buy Shiat Mobos like Epox, then you might have problems! Ran a T-bird 1.33 with 5 case fans, a delta on my sk6, and had no problems. Now I have an xp1600+ (I know it sucks less juice) and still not a single problem. BTW, this is all on a KG-7 RAID.
