Energy makes excellent speakers. Their Take 5.2 system is a good bang for the buck home theater speaker system. Amazon has them on clearance with free super saver shipping.

Take 2.2 satellites $98 per pair in black
Take 1.2 center channel $69.98 in black

Speaker Stands for the Take 2.2 satellites $49.98 per pair model #10559

No Energy subwoofers in stock at Amazon. However, I think the Dayton 10" powered sub at partsexpress is excellent for the price. It's currently $99.88 and ships for free right now.

So...
Take 1.2 $70
Take 2.2 ($200 for 4 satellites)
Stands ($100 for 2 pairs)
Sub ($100)

Total $470 for a quality home theater system. Likely, no tax and free shiping depending on where you live.

Appreciate opinions or alternatives in that range.

Yea energy are on the same line as paradigm and are very good speakers. Paradigm seem to have better base but energy have slightly better high/medium range frequencies.

This is a nice deal. I have the original Energy Take 5.1 speakers and they sound incredible.

i know it is a matter of preferance so i not trying to thread crap here but to me energy speakers dont sound as good as klipsh or cambridge soundworks. now i realize that the CS dont have the same snob appeal as klipsh does but they are very good. And the CS p1000 sub is probably the best sub i have ever heard (granted it retails for $999.99) it can be had on sale for less (i just got one for 800).

i personally own klipsh, cs, and even some of the RS linium speakers from about 10 years ago (these liniums were amazing for the money back in that day)

on the other hand i have a friend who swears by energy and another that swears by bose (where to me bose is useless for anything othe than classical or orchestra type)

my point is #1 make sure you listen to what you buy first everyones ear is different. #2 do not fall into the snob appeal, many people laugh at cs because it does not have the image but others love cs. and #3 for a good portion of the public they would know the differance between pioneers and klipsh these people can save money but just getting pioneers and they would be just as happy but the spent the money because the sales monkey convinced them too (because he gets paid by commission)

i would like to hear everyone elses opinion too but we all need to remember there is no right answer here.

Youre ranking Klipsh over Energy? You have got to be kidding me! Last Dec i test drove 23 pairs of speakers through my Onyko NR-1000... I ended up keeping the Energy's. Klipsh offer the most flat, dull, sound ive ever heard. Hell, the Infinities sounded better.

Now, i do agree with him. Its all a matter of personal taste. You really should goto a Good Guys store or Tweeter, which both sell Energy to be sure these are ok for you. Although the Take series speakers are their lowest level offerings, they sound good. An Encore setup is a big step up from the take series however.

I've got the Take 1's and let me tell ya. They suck for music. Hook up a good set of speakers to the A and the Take's to the B's and you will see a world of difference when you toggle between the two.

For HT though they're OK. Sometimes you have to crank them up whcih some company might not like.

I spent a lot of 2-3 years ago reading reviews before I decided on the Energy's. Although they are JUST OK, I wonder how many of their reviews were writtin by employees.

FYI Info. I'm no audiophile, just know what I like.

yes i feel klipsh is better, keep in mind that klipsh makes a huge range of stuff from base computer type stuff to actual theater equiptment (like ua theatres not home stuff) maybe you heard a lower line or maybe like i said klipsh isnt your thing.

this does not make you right and me wrong that is all you need to remember.

that is my biggest complaint about energy, where to me others sound good at a full range of volumes.

this is just another example of why there is no wrong here.

Klipsch? Snob value? This isn't the 70's anymore.

Agreed that Klipsch may not be audiophile box of choice for some people, but they are excellent values at most every price point they touch - and they touch one of the widest price point ranges I know of in the industry since they represent massive theater installs and computer speakers. I personally have found Klipsch terrific for any music that plays loud - the horn design is outstanding for that.

Do take the time to audition in a good listening room, and even at home if you have an agreeable dealer. Tha is really the only way that you will be able to pick out what sounds best to you.

I mentioned in another post that some of the best values are found in the used audiophile speaker market. If you check out the local Craigs List or http://www.Audiogon.com you can find some super deals. Think 50 - 90% off the original price.

With CL you can check out the speakers at the owner's place and see if they are a match to your ears. Of course, if you know what you are buying, Ebay is an option... Personally I like to examine and listen to used speakers because the foam and rubber surrounds that support the speaker cones do deteriorate, even rot over time.

Yep, definitely hear them out before you purchase them. Don't forget to get a powerful decoder to push those speakers though. Personally, I love my Take 5.1; very nice setup.

There's also some other places to check.

I know I don't have an exhaustive list here, but there are the places I've been checking pretty much every day in addition to audiogon

http://www.videogon.com/index.html (has a lot of overlap for listing with audiogon, but some differences too)

I'm pretty much just lurking around to see if I can get a killer deal on an SVS sub of some sort.
I know when I was looking for speakers I missed out on a complete Ascend Acoustics set by a day or so. If I had seen it, that's what I would be listening to right now rather than the rockets.

For the sub I'm hoping another 20-39 PC+ / CS+ (or an Ultra) based SVS set comes along for about half price :)

Great opinions...great links. Thanks. Now for the subwoofer. Any opinions on the Dayton 10" Sub from PartsExpress? I also saw that they have a new 12" sub for only $25 more. Has anyone heard these?

I wonder what could be a minimun receiver or amplifier to drive these speakers out of a sound card?

No less than 65 watts per channel. Theres a nice inepensive pioneer that would do these speakers justice.. I just cant remember the model # but its under $400.

I had the 10" before my SVS and I liked it quite a bit. For $100, it's a great deal. I haven't heard the 12" at all, but if the quality is the same, I'd take it over the 10".
