Energy bars... Which ones and do they work?

I'm looking for a quick way to supply some extra energy and pep into my daily diet. I do not want it to be a meal replacement. Also, this summer i plan to get in a lot of roller hockey with my friends, and my cardiovascular condition is "weak" to say the least (note: im 20, 5"10 about 160 lbs give or take 5). The winter hasn't been good to me either, and i haven't gotten in a decent day of excercise (save for my dumbbells at home) in over 5 months.

Now, aside from cardio workouts and the like, would i benefit at all from munching down one of these energy bars, let's say in the morning pregame, to improve my endurance?

I play a lot of hockey already and I'm sucking wind on every shift... it don't matter what you eat. ;)

Start running now!

Seriously, i think running > energy bar, for what you are trying to do.

The drinks help to replenish energy afterward... helps in the rebuilding muscles faster so that you are "energized" again after physical activity. I think they help somewhat, but only afterward.

Drink a lot of water during the activity... it's highly underrated for what it can do for your body - H20.

Energy bars don't 'work' the way you think they do... they just fill the hunger with something more nutritious than a chocholate bar, but they don't give you an energy boost or anything like that. Try caffeine if that's what you're after.

Gatorade drinks do work... to replenish electrolytes. I can definitely feel a difference after a good 2-3 hrs of heavy martial arts... if i don't have a gatorade or anything similar to replenish the electrolytes, my body feels like jello the rest of the day, and all i want to do is sleep. With gatorade, i feel much more refreshed.
