Ending Ebay Auction early?

Argo

Lifer
I'm selling my bike on ebay and so far not a single bet is above my reserve price. Somebody contacted me, asking if I'm willing to sell the bike off-line. Provided I go ahead with that, would that be against e-bay policies?

Technically yes, but if you don't say anything, no one will catch you.
You can end the auction early for any reason... changed your mind, sell to highest bidder, item damaged, etc etc.

And it's also an automated process, so don't expect to the Ebay police to track you down. Unless you do this frequently or soemthing.

Actually, if there are bids on the bike, it's not as easy. You have to actually send e-ails and stuff I think. N obids though .... easily cancled .. no problems.

jsut tell the guy if the bike doesn't hit hte reserve, you'll sell it to him.

And just wait. Soemone will buy it. Please post EBay link to auction also 😉

You're probably being scammed. Did the seller speak in broken english, say he's buying the bike as a gift for a friend/relative, or say he'd be paying with Western Union? How about offer more than you asked? Or say the check would be for $5000 and you can just wire the difference back after keeping a little for yourself?

Oh no. Last time I did that some lowlife contacted the bidder telling them something I didn't want them to know.

At least post the email you got from the potential buyer here (just edit out all identifying info). It's a very popular tactic for scammers to ask you to end the auction early (thus nullifying ebay's seller protections)

scam.....tell him to bid on the auction and when he is the high bidder....just end the auction early declaring him as the winner...this is perfectly legal and I do it all the time

He's just asking if I'm willing to sell the bike locally and for how much. He will pay cash. Obviously I won't get involved if its "I'll send you $10,000 and you give me change" scam.

Oh, if it's a local sale go ahead. Can't get much safer than a cash payment and with something like a bike, the buyer may want to check it out in person anyway.

Actually, even with bids it's VERY EASY to cancel an ebay auction.......you just click on "Stop my auction early" link in the seller section, then pick a reason.....they give all sorts as has been mentioned. If it has bids, you get to choose to sell to high bidder right then or cancel all bids and end the auction......and it's all done with a click of the mouse button.....no emails have to be sent by you. Ebay notifies the bidders automatically that the auction was ended early.....you have no work to do.

If it's a reserve auction and reserve hasn't been met yet, it's even easier to end it early. Ebay just asks why...pick a reason from our list....and then click cancel/end auction. It ends. No asking if you want to sell to high bidder because reserve hasn't been met.

There is NO WORK FOR THE SELLER TO END AN AUCTION such as sending out emails to all the bidders.....that's just stupid......and shows someone is talking about something he/she knows absolutely nothing about.

No I'm not hiding anything. I just don't want some schmuck from ATOT to contact the potential bidders and tell them that I'm considering to sell the bike off line.

And teh last time? what was it then?

I was actually the buyer last time. There was a little problem with the product I bought, where I believed I was misinformed and the seller claimed that was mentioned in the description. I posted this on ATOT, asking for advice and considering not paying the seller. Somebody on ATOT contacted the seller with the link to the thread and telling him that I'm considering not paying.

In the end, I ended up paying for the product, and working out the problems with the seller, however, I learned not to post anything personal on ATOT anymore.
