So, after insurance replacments and new iphone 6s rollout to my users I ended up with a spare iphone 6 gold 16gb. I was thinking of using it as my work phone. I currently use a sony z3v for work and a note 4 as my personal device (i'll never give that up) but was thinking of going back to the iphone just for work and to refresh my ios knowledge to help my apple users. Anyway, the real question is this. I can sell this phone for whatever or I can use it for work. The phone is on ios 8.4. Is the phone worth more to some people with 8.4 or should I update it to the latest 9.x? Or does it not matter at all?

I'd sell it, only going to decrease in value. IIRC, Apple has updated the BT chip in the current iP6's it's selling now.

Now that you can jailbreak 9.0.X, no reason to not update it.

One does not simply sell or jailbreak work devices.

Unless one's company has a strange device policy or one is the Big Chief of the company...

True. Most of the time I sell devices on the companies behalf. Money goes into the petty cash fund. Many time I sell or swap to get a better device for myself. They are fully aware of it too. Hell, the owners have used other peoples upgrades to get better devices for themselves!

Since you use an Adroid phone for personal, it would make some sense to use the iPhone for work so you can be iOS knowledgable to help your users.

You definitely should update to the latest iOS. I cannot think of a reason to not update.

I did. Tried using it for work but will sell it as I have 2 5s and 3 4s siting on my desk doing nothing. I can use those for testing ios knowledge.

I think it's better to delay the update now, IOS 8 is good and conservative.

Staying on iOS 8.x is a bad idea.

iOS 9 has the content blocker for Safari...desperately needed since it has only 1GB RAM. iOS 9 + Purify Blocker.

Welcome to Anandtech?

iOS 9.0.2 can be jailbroken and is still being signed by Apple. No reason not to use that.
