End to viruses?

Footnotes: Honeypots distributed throughout internetwork that capture viruses, create a fix, and release the fix to everyone on the fly. Viruses will be shutdown before they even make headlines.

as long as people out there enjoy creating viruses, there will always be them.

There needs to be an end to the spelling virii. The singular form is NOT virius.

Anyway, there will always be worms and viruses. They've been around for over 20 years.

As long as you can have remote code executed there will be viruses. And as long as you have software there will be bugs that allow remote code.

The point isn't that people can't write viruses, the point is they won't spread like the do now. Instead of every user for him or herself, the protection will just exist on the network as a whole. It will require a large investment by someone, but whoever does it will get huge publicity so I can't imagine we'll have trouble getting the support. One person at IBM said it was "promising", so we could see this happen within 5-10 years.

I dont't like their approach at all. Too many holes and ways around it.

There are two very effective methods right now.
1) Use software between the OS and Kernal that prevents remote code. Even unpatched computers with this method wide open on the internet will never be infected with a virus/worm
2) Build the intelligence into the network infrastructure at every level. Network sees virus or worm activity and automatically shuns or blocks this communication.

#1 is out today and has been for a while - host based intrusion prevention.
#2 is very close. There are rudimentary systems but it isn't perfect yet.
