"End Program -- SW" message when I try to shut down

So I'm cruising along, installing software on a new machine I put together from spare parts yesterday. I load Windows 2000 Pro, install SP4 and bunch of Windows Updates, then install the Intel INF chipset utility, then go to install DirectX 9.0C off of Microsoft's site.

I go thru the installation, everything appears to go as planned, then it tells me to restart my machine. So I try, but then a window appears in the middle of the screen and says, "End Program -- SW. Please Wait." So I wait, and watch the blue 'status bar' move from left to right across the top of the window, and it reaches the end. It then says, "This program is not responding. If you choose to end the program immediately, you will lose any unsaved data. To end the program now, click End Now." And there are two buttons to choose from (to click): End Now or Cancel. If I click End Now, the machine shuts down. If I click Cancel, the machine obviously doesn't shut down.

Any of you guys seen this before and/or know what to do to fix it? I'm not about to wait for that stupid "End Program --SW" window to appear and wait for it to do it's thing and then have to click "End Now" everytime I shut the machine down or restart it.

And since you can't uninstall DirectX, and there's no System Restore with W2K Pro, now what??? Grrrrr .... :frown:

Oh, and I searched Microsoft's site for "End Program -- SW" to no avail. A Google search was likewise futile.

I have the same problem on two of my workstations here at work. One is Windows 2000 and the other is a Windows XP laptop. I'm worried that this might be some new malware.

Would like to hear others' findings.
