End of year "Vacation Time use it/lose it/get paid out for it" thread......

So I've got a week (maybe two?, not sure)......of vacation time leftover. I'll be faxing off timecards here shortly & we (owner & I) haven't talked about vacation time since earlier this year. Last year was a quasi-payout. (I think we estimated a week a half leftover & he included it in my last paycheck of 2005).

(Note: We didn't used to do this, it was either use it/lose it and since I work for a small company, it was typically, lose it since it's hard to leave for any descent amount of time)

Anybody else in a similar boat?

not yet, i have been hovering my vacation from 3-4 weeks for a while, i think we can carry up to six weeks, so i doubt i'll ever get in that boat

They don't do cashout for my role. I've got something like 2 months of vacation stored up. I can't imagine a situation where I'd be able to take that much time off though. 🙁

How much are you allowed to carry over? They let us bring a max of 80 hours over every year. Take a couple of 3-4 day weekends and have "sick" days.

I'm gonna take four days off immediately after the first, and do NOTHING. At my company, we're allowed to carry a max of 180 days.

I think you mean hours.

I can carry 160 hours (20 days). I plan to keep my vacation near max so when I quit I get paid a month's salary.

My sick days carry over indefinitely - when I retire, I can cash them in for up to 10 years of health insurance (I'll have way more than enough to cover that) I get 3 personal days per year; I can use them, convert them to sick days, or else cash them in for an extra $100 each. I opt for the extra $100. I'm closing in on half a year worth of sick time on the books, so I don't need the extra sick time available.

Here in California there's a law that requires you to be paid for any vacation time accumulated when you leave an employer. I quit a job about a month ago, and I'm waiting on a check for about 2 weeks worth of vacation pay from them.

Ya, I have a neighbor who's in a similar boat to some of you........

I think he has like a couple lifetimes of vacation saved up, which means that technically he's financially independent, but he can't take it off and will never get paid out for it........LOL!!! We always joke about that one. 😛

I guess I'll just wait & see & if it ain't in there, bring it up after the first & see what hell there is to have to listen to over the phone.......

they're supposed to give you a check on the last day...

check labor laws, they could be fined and owe you interest.

Yeah, hours, silly me. Another good thing, our *cough cough* sick days are not counted.

If you have 2 months of vacation left, is it realistic to be able to take off the 2 months all at once? Or at least 1 month?

Of course it depends on the job and your responsibility, but generally what is the maximum amount of time off a normal office worker can take off at once? I'm the kind of person that likes long trips as opposed to sitting at home on a Monday every now and then, and was just wondering what to expect.

Q. My employer?s vacation policy provides that if I do not use all of my annual vacation entitlement by the end of the year, that I lose the unused balance. Is this legal?

A. No, such a provision is not legal. In California, vacation pay is another form of wages which vests as it is earned (in this context, "vests" means you are invested or endowed with rights in the wages). Accordingly, a policy that provides for the forfeiture of vacation pay that is not used by a specified date ("use it or lose it") is an illegal policy under California law and will not be recognized by the Labor Commissioner

I won't max out my vacation for another 2 - 3 years. We can carry over 640 hours from year to year.
Right now, I only have 403.
90 Sick leave
75 CTO (Compensated Time Off. Work 1 hour OT, get 1.5 hours off) Great for saving up vacation hours.
8 Personal Holiday

i end up checking email/remoting in when i take days off anyway, so why bother using vacation up?

No kidding...I always had trouble saving enough vacation to take a week off...😛

Some people save up a bunch for certain occasions, i.e. wanting to take off a month after the birth of a child.

You're lucky - I only get 3 personal days per year. I won't ever be able to take a week off from my regularly scheduled work time. All my vacations have to be planned around the regular schedule. i.e. I'd love to go on an elk or caribou hunting trip - it'll never happen until after I retire.

Welcome to the 21st century.........

Remember all the mergers, downsizing, leaning & weening we did right there at the end of the last century??

Well, all that's added up to a big whopping-------> BUSINESS IS SO FVCKING LEAN NOW, NOBODY CAN TAKE TIME OFF ANYMORE!!!!

I remember driving acrossed the country from Cali to Michigan when I was a kid. It was a 2-week vacation. Later, as a teen, we went to Oregon for a week and a half to visit relatives. Those types of holidays will probably NEVARRR happen in my "employed" lifetime.

(FWIW, I've managed "one" week in 1995, 1999 and 2001)
