Interesting, that they also, like MS's page, state that automatic updates will be turned off on April 14th. They also mention that MSE will no longer be available for download for XP on that date. Which is really interesting, since there is a thread in the Software for Windows forum, which claims MS has relented, and will provide MSE virus def updates for like six months past the EOL date for XP. Why not let people download it still, if they are still going to provide updates?

Anyways, time to get off of XP, or unplug it from the Internet.

That's a nice countdown chart. :awe: I wonder what will happen to it after April 8th? Will it go into the negatives? When we switched to daylight savings at 2am at McDonalds, the drivethru times said something like each car was waiting 8911274324723 minutes.

edit: Well I switched my date to October 2014 and now the website says "Times up!" with this pop-up:

So on April 15th, millions won't be able to submit there taxes due to Windows XP crashing. I'm sure the IRS will like that excuse :)

I am hoping Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 will keep my Windows XP running until it's time to move onto something else like a cloud. ;)

I was being a bit vague. The typo for Exchange 2013, clearly they mean 2003. At least I hope so

They should kill XP ASAP since its had a very long run and well overdue for the OS in the sky ,every OS gets laid to rest sooner or later and you always have all the newer Windows or Linux distros to choose from(my XP paved wave for good old Linux many years ago).

There is no real excuse not to be using one of the many newer operating systems nowadays IMHO.

XP RIP .

yeah that is true but most windows xp users think linux would be useless for their need. i have used ubuntu and liked it but it's not going to be something which i would use 100%. the number of people using some form of linux is something like 1.5% so my next upgrade would HAVE to be something Microsoft.

Except when you are running older hardware that doesn't have drivers available for Vista/7/8...

So if your hardware dies and you can't get the parts due to being too old what do you do then?..Sounds like a cheap skate cop out to me(not meaning you for the record).

I could also argue Windows XP is well over a decade old and you are saying nobody here can't be bothered to start saving for new hardware and OS,I mean you had nearly 15 years to get the money ready :hmm: .

Chuck it in the bin and buy new hardware. Its 2014, not 2001. Don't tell me you didn't forsee this and though you'd still be running 1995 era hardware in 2014. And, gosh, there are no drivers! Really?

They will, but your XP machine will be so badly compromised by the end of April, you'll be eating bricks with a spoon just to avoid turning it on...

That said, your machine is probably already severely compromised. I haven't seen a healthy XP installation in over two years...

In my experience, older hardware has been more reliable than newer hardware. They don't make laptops like they used to (in my opinion). If this trend is true, your new computer's hardware may die before his old one. :)

during typing i realized my post is as irrelavant as this thread. apologies (to some)

the relevant variable in the situation is the user, not the OS. winXP in this case which some of you seem have a juvenile distaste for. hopefully due to age, an not overgrown immaturity.

those who don't know how to use something arn't going to use it.

that said, i don't think its a bad idea for the majority to upgrade if its feasible for them if using xp, seeing as the majority cant properly operate/maintain/drive a vehicle, what hope would there pc have. however if the reasoning behind the upgrade is paranoid delusion, that is a medication issue, more specifically a 'recreational medication' issue. tho's who know how to use the internet won't be scared away from xp anway. but that doesn't justify reasoning for trying to scare people from xp due to your own 'recreational medication' induced paranoia.

not to mention a slew of other flaws in your anti-xp propaganda

some of you make it sound like computer internet security is ran from the OS programer (Microsoft) same way rural buisness street security was ran by the mafia back in the day. you think once MS stops trying to make an OS more secure that is there personal gaurentee something bad is going to happen to your OS? LOL ...not to mention your misplaced faith in MS to upkeep security on your OS in the first place. winXP, win7/8, etc, you are still at risk, the majority of system compromise is from targeting the human operator error factor, no matter the OS it won't stop some people for attempting to get a free ipod, etc.

xp has its purpose. if you don't have a purpose for xp, your lack of perspective does not defeat logic. sorry to put the kibosh on your field trip down retardation lane. apologies (to some)

Using XP past the cutoff date, is like living on the US border near Mexico. There will be lots of nasties trying to jump in. What happens when your border patrol budget gets slashed to zero?

Sure, perhaps you can last it out for a while, if you arm yourself to the teeth and become your own "Army of One", but how long will that last? And how much will it cost, in both $$$ and time (reformats).

Better to upgrade, and move to some place that still has a border patrol.

i saw the information from Kaspersky which said that they will give windows xp support after april 2014 with Kaspersky Internet Security 2014. i have no reason to doubt Kaspersky just Microsoft. One minute Microsoft internet security essential is stopping april 2014 and the next minute it will continue to april 2015. make your mind up Microsoft.

I think most of us have moved on from XP with newer hardware and OS,as I stated you have to let the OS go sooner or later and that goes for any OS,also newer operatings bring new fetures, improved security etc so another reason to upgrade,it's not like you only had XP for 6 months before the next major OS was released,we are not far from Win9 so that goes to show how long XP has been around.

Personally I find upgrading not much of a problem and that goes for both drivers and software with general compatibility, yes I'll be upgrading to Win9 and moving forward like I always do.

My gf has a business running 8 PC's using XP. They have been fine, no failures, not even a hard drive yet. She is worried that after April she will be open to security issues. The replacement cost for new PC's and a server is around $6,600 including updated software to run the business.

That's quite a chunk for a small business to put out, and she hasn't budgeted for it. I really wish XP support would continue, it's not really fun upgrading equipment that is functioning adequately for what she needs.

Windows 8.1 doesn't seem like the best option either, but in reality Windows 7 is already old. We are going to keep them going for another year, internet access for employees will be limited etc.

It just sucks that people with older software that works fine have to upgrade. I suppose for a single home user the cry to "just upgrade" seems simple, but for businesses, and particularly large businesses, it is a pain in the ass.
