End of Ink printers is near?

You can get a kickass color laser printer/scanner/copier for $300 now.

The image quality is amazing, and I'm hoping that I'm never going to deal with clogged print heads again.

With facebook and twitter does anyone even print pictures anymore? Seems like everything just gets plastered to digital walls and forgotten.

At home, I've gone through many printers (overuse) and have yet to need to ever print in color. If I want photo-quality printing, I use a service with calibrated and regularly-maintained photo printers. Heck, even your local Walmart would print better than just about any inkjet people use at home and have it delivered right to your door at a fraction of the cost of printing it yourself.

I guess I never quite saw the point of $50 to $100 yearly ink bills for low quality printing when sub-$300 lasers have been around for two decades.

We don't print photos at home anymore. With them being digital we just print them using an online service or store them online to share. We've switched over to laser at home.

I can't remember the last time I needed to print anything in colour. I have a monochrome laser printer that I just really use to print out my financial statements.

If I did need any photos done, there's a place in the mall that will do it on high quality paper for not much money. Ink jet printers are a huge waste.

Not unless color lasers are included and they can print photo quality.

Ink quality for photo sucks.

Let me rephrase that, it looks good at first but over time it fades and looks like crap.

Laser printers are DIRT cheap. I just bought one for like $50 bucks (none color/no need).

When I do print in color, I do it at work. We have solid cartridge printer that looks great and doesn't fade over time.

I still have a need to print out forms to sign and send back, not always the best idea to do it at work.

I have an HP color laser jet printer that supports AirPrint. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Inkjet printers are worthless, and I see no use for them for home users. Who freakin' prints photos no a days?

I need to buy a colour Laser, my colour inkjet is expensive to run and my old trusty 8150DN is getting long in the tooth ... but a great workhorse for an academic.

This.

If I want to print a photo, I use mpix. So much easier/cheaper than buying/maintaining a inkjet. A few years back I purchased a high quality inkjet with the intent to print my photography. Sure it did a great job and I loved having the control, but ultimately I barely used it and it cost me way more in ink/paper/original purchase than what I got out of it. If I was a pro, maybe I could justify, but even then I think I'd rather just work with a quality print shop.

It's them dang schools!

For personal use, I rarely needed more than the B&W output of my old LaserJet 4L
But kid's homework prints often need color.

I don't need to print photos but I (well my wife...) prints many documents with photos in them. Maybe I'll reevaluate when my current printer breaks.

lot of people make side income or a living on etsy with their ink jet printers. a lot of the print on demand sites (redbubble, society6, imagekind, etc) probably use lasers for some prints but they also use ink jets. Giclée prints for example.

laser is good for a lot of things but you've also got thermal printers, which are better for stuff like mailing labels, tickets, etc.

I have an nice Canon all in one ink jet. Ink is cheap, I pay about $20 for 5 full kits (25 Carts) of generic ink at Amazon. Never had a problem. I use a little more than a kit a year. It's only expensive if you buy into the "Use only OEM ink" BS.

As far as photos, I have them printed at Walgreens, it's still cheaper when you factor in paper and time. I would rather view them on my computer, but my wife likes them printed.

No, as laser printers become more popular the price of inkjet ink will drop. The cost of ink is almost all profit, they will just slowly wind down the huge markup to stay competitive.

Laser ink is not cheap either, only advantage is that they do not dry up if not used for extended period of time. I do not care about picture quality, I have never printed pictures, specially because you can get them 11 cents or less at the store. All my print outs are documents, I went for laser printer because my inkjets ink would dry up as I do not use it that often.
I went for blank and white laser as color was too expensive, specially if you take into consideration the cost color of laser cartridges. I still have multifunction inkjet printer which I now use for scanning only.

If you compare canon, a typical PG-210XL costs around $19 and prints 400 pages, costing 4.75 cents per page. By same comparison, and a laser toner cartridge costs $64 and prints 1600 pages costing 4 cents per page. So you see the cost of ink is not that different compared to toner

I have another question - Laser have laser inks or Toners? Can Toners be called Ink as well? because I heard that its a kind of powder.
