Sony to discontinue 3.5 inch floppy disk in Japan

Sony announced on April 23rd that they will be discontinuing sales of the classic 3.5 inch floppy disk in Japan in 2011. The news marks a major end to a nearly three decade history of the disk type that the company helped to pioneer.

According to Sony, they introduced the 3.5 inch floppy disk size to the world in 1981, and began sales within Japan in 1983. Sony had shipped approximately 47 million disks within the country at its peak around the year 2000, but that number had fallen to around 8.5 million by 2009, Sankei News reported.

In 2008 Sony accounted for around 40% of the world’s market share in 3.5 inch floppy disks, Nikkei wrote; within Japan, Sony has held about 70% of the market share in recent years, the Asahi added.

Sony will stop sales within Japan in March of 2011, and with the exception of a few niche markets such as in India, the company’s worldwide sales finished in March of this year, the Mainichi stated. Sony ceased its outsourced production of the 3.5 inch floppy in 2009. It is also noted that most other major manufacturers of the disk type have already withdrawn from the market entirely.

Lack of demand was stated as the major reason for the decision, with many pointing to the rapid expansion of other media saving methods, such as CDs, DVDs, and USB drives, as well as a significant decrease in floppy disk-supporting hardware.

Beyond the floppy, the 3.5 inch size is still used for Sony’s magneto optical disks.

I never had a Sony floppy - always bought cheaper brands.
This doesn't mean floppies will disappear for good - just that Sony won't make them any more.

The Best Buy up the street still sells them, they have about 20 boxes on the shelves. Apparently there's still some demand for them.

I still don't know why I put a floppy drive in my computer 2 years ago.. I guess I saw it cheap and splurged. The excitement when it arrived was overwhelming. :D

lol:)

DAAM 45 discs? That must be one looooong ass install. I wouldn't have done it, with my luck disk 38 would have had some bad sectors. The biggest disk thing I ever installed was Zork Zero? It was like 14 disks and took forever to install. 45 is just mind boggling.

I'm surprised that sales are still at 25% of their peak. I haven't touched one in years.

I'm suprised the peak was in 2000. I thought CD-RWs had taken over by then.

I remember downloading my first mp3 to a floppy so I could play it on our other computer which didn't have internet access.

I remember 5 megs taking half an hour. Those were the times. :D

I remember first getting broadband and thinking "I'm downloading stuff from across the Earth faster than I can read from a floppy drive".

Nah that was Windows 3.1. Windows 95 would have taken a shit ton more than that.

I remember trying to copy files bigger than 1.44 meg and having to use pkzip to span them across several floppies. For those of you that don't know, pkzip and pkunzip were the dos versions of that wonderful Winzip we have today.
