it's always funny to me that every time a politician proposes hitting china back for its manipulation of the currency market, a bunch of 'free traders' come out of the woodwork to oppose the move.

That's just an effect of Chinese protectionism.
Can I add you to the list of those opposing Chinese protectionism?

Why its almost like the free traders have absolutly no idea what free trade is.

Oh, they don't.

I think we should ban the importation of all food products and prosthetic body parts (such as dental crowns that might contain lead) that were made in China.

Yes, but what does that have to do with free trade and protectionism?

So which are you, a free marketeer, or a free trader?

Yes, and thanks for weighing in.
I think this should be a huge issue in the campaign.

I would love to see that, free trade is OK to some extent but just like control free financial sector I feel its a disaster too. Free trade is good for our economy only if we can compete in the world market, but our current policies are a disaster for any new manufacturing business - we have so many regulation whereas our competitors like China Taiwan India or Mexico have none + they have cheap labor. These countries have an undue advantage, there is no way US companies can compete them in the world market.
Now some would say that we should be innovative - we cant just rely on our innovations to survive anymore, the last 8 years has seen significant cut in govt funded researches which has slowed down the pace a lot and will take years to come back to the original form. Also we have a significant population increase and we have seen a huge influx of unskilled immigrants which makes it very difficult to survive on just innovations. We have to manufacture goods that other countries make and have to compete with them in the world market. For that we need strong control on free trade such as we can allow import of ONLY those good which are manufactured under emission regulations and labor laws exactly same as ours...

But its never going to happen. Lobbyists control our country to the point of no return and the next presidential candidate has already taken more then 0.5 billion from these people. He himself has no idea about how much ass he will have to kiss to keep himself afloat!

That's a BS issue that candidates can talk about but in fact can't do nothing after they get elected to the office.

The reason Chinese can manipulate their currency is because they have huge reserve through their net exports. In layman's term, they are using their own money to buy their stability. What are you gonna do about it through political channel? Put a gun in their head to tell them not to do it? Punish them through trade where US will get hurt more then benefit?

In addition, have you ever consider that there are countries that wish to make their currency stable to avoid meltdown like 98 Asian crisis? Not every country wants to do 100% free market and let market determine everything, and if they chose to do that with their own money, how is American gonna force them to do otherwise?
