End all Alaska speculation

After much speculation, Begish opened up a 3724 vote lead yesterday, with just 2500 over out of State absentees remaining to count.

While Stevens still could have opted to post a $15,000 bond and request a recount, he finally decided to concede instead.

http://cbs3.com/national/Ted.S...election.2.868085.html

I could have posted this on some of the other Stevens threads now buried pages back, but they either contained dated speculations or had degenerated to democratic Republican thread extraneous name calling.

And this should be the end all thread that puts the Alaska Senate race to bed.

And Begish won, end of story. And the end of a very long run for Stevens who has other alligators snapping at his ankles.

Alaska should still be sold for being so close to letting a multiple felony convicted corrupt politician get so close to winning again.

There are some residents who would be more that happy to be free of the US, as long as we don't sell them back to those Russians

Good call - if we can get $10T for it, we're good on national debt.

Good. Now we'll wait and see if Ted concedes on the felony conviction and quietly goes to jail.

The territory of Alaska would belong to one of three countries.

Russia, Canada or the US

Russia can not afford it
Texas would love to be the big dog again.
Canada by default - geographically is where is belongs anyhow.

The state of Alaska would belong to the people of Alaska.

Why didn't that come to mind?

Given the quality of their politicians, (which is what started the thread) do you trust them to run it themselves?

The freedom of others is not up for you to decide. They are not government property to be sold to another nation.

I gasp, have to agree with PJ. Other than the actual felony conviction, there is not a dime worth of difference between Uncle Ted and at least a few dozen politicians I could name on a bi partisan basis.

That is how they came to be in the first place.

Other options:
Set them up as their own country
They were a territory and asked for statehood. Revert?

THIS

Also, the Canadians I know think Palin is as stupid as the lower 48 do, so I'm not sure Canada would want Alaska, either.

Hell, if Alaska joined Canada, the NEWFIES would make fun of it.

"Tactical de-nationalization". Laser guided de-nationalizing ordnance dropped on them, the effect of which is to immediately raise a 90,000 foot high impenetrable wall through which nothing can go or come.

Naturally, I will become president next. And some things are going to change (I already promised Gobadgrs to head the secret police, but other cabinet positions are still open).

Yes they are. At least as long as they owe D.C. money (which they do because the entire state has been subsidized since it was bought).

I have long held the belief that our politicians should suffer the same fate as those in the military, get convicted of a felony, loose your job, AND your pension! Heck, if I had even failed a piss test for marijuana use in the Army, my career, and pension would have been GONE. Alas, tis only a pipe dream.

Uncle Ted supposedly gave his swan song speech in the Senate today. Its not clear if he will now go home or still vote in the Senate for the remaining duration of this congress.

But ole Ted asserted he intended to fight the conviction and clear his name.

Which brings up interesting pardon issues and sentencing timing issues. While Stevens has already appealed his conviction, he remains a free man until his 2/2009 sentencing date. At which point the judge can opt to send Stevens straight to jail or let him remain free for the 18 months or so it will take to appeal his conviction. Or the judge could decide he is too old to go to jail and take some middle ground.

And since GWB must get off the pot or shit in terms of issuing Stevens a pardon on or before 1/20/2009, that issue remains interesting.

But it becomes doubly interesting for another reason. Because its my understanding that if Stevens accepts the GWB pardon, he loses the ability to appeal his case and clear his name by beating the conviction on appeal.

Stevens already gambled once and lost when he demanded an early trial he could have easily have pushed into 2009, had the jury voted acquittal, Stevens would probably have won the election.

Alaska serves as bad example. Imagine what it is like in other countries with large oil deposits that don't have the US system of government and rule of law?
Now I know why many of the countries with large oil deposits are ruled by criminals.
