Encryption on HDD or SSD in external enclosure

How does hardware encryption work when the drive is in an external USB3 enclosure? Example:

I want to backup an SBS2011 server onto a WD black 2.5" which will be in a USB3 external enclosure. I would like the drive to have hardware encryption. (I need to confirm if this drive supports this).

I have never used hardware encryption before on a drive but does it even work if the drive is in an external enclosure?
