Get naim. It's had encryption for some time now. True, the key is sent in the open air, but it's still a lot better than AIM was before it stole the idea from the OpenSource community.

Trillian has this ability to other trillian users (over AIM and ICQ). Not sure how encrypted it is, but, it does have secure connections beyond 'plain text'. Works rather well.
