Encrypted files from old HD to new HD...

Existing MB died and gone...Still have my present Hard Drive w/ XP Pro (SP3)32 bit with all apps and files sitting in my case.

With new motherboard, I am also getting new hard drive and new operating system- Vista Ultimate 64 bit w/SP1 ... this will be a clean new install.

I want to get existing files from the old hard drive to the new one. Problem is that there is an encryption program on the old HD and my MS Word files, emails, etc are encrypted, so that I have to run that prog, ie, enter my PW, so that the files "show up" on the old HD, so that I can copy them over to the new HD??

I don't understand how I can do this... HELP...

Also, considering what needs to be done, do I have to buy the "full" ($320.)version of Vista Ultimate 64 bit, or the "upgrade"($220.) version?

You need to figure out how to backup/restore those files within that program. It might be as simple as copying them and using that program to open them on the new install but without even knowing the name of the program it's hard to say.

The program is called "Evidence Eliminator" I believe... It's old...

One person said to just leave old HD as a second HD in system, and then "copy-paste" files to new HD.

BUT, I was under the impression that one could not "run" a prog from a backup HD, ie, run an "exe", open the prog, enter the PW to un-encrypt files, then back to find the file folder where files are, then "copy-paste" over to new HD.

Also, considering what needs to be done, do I have to buy the "full" ($320.)version of Vista Ultimate 64 bit, or the "upgrade"($220.) version?

Just buy Vista Home Premium OEM 64-bit for $100, unless you REALLY need the Ultimate extras (I somehow doubt they're worth $100-200 extra).

And you could always try booting the old hdd on the new system. If the chipset is similar you might get lucky and boot right up.

EDIT: And if not lucky, just do a repair install and all should work again. Then you can boot to that drive and unencrypt your files long enough to copy them over to a flash drive or something.

Is this the program? (Wikipedia.org, Evidence Eliminator)

Quite a checkered past. But I don't see where it does any file encryption.

Regarding your licensing, if you own an XP license for the PC, you can use an Upgrade Vista license. You can either perform an upgrade install, or can perform a clean install of Vista. You just can't move XP elsewhere and keep using it by itself.

If you don't mind starting fresh, you can buy Vista OEM version. The Home versions are around $100 and the Ultimate versions are around $180 last I checked. These OEM versions aren't supposed to be moved to a new PC once installed.

I'm dumb... that's not the prog. It's called "magic folders", and I got the encrypted files ver.

I didn't see a User Manual for that encryption software. Do you have one?

I'd probably write their Tech Support folks for instructions. I would not TOUCH that old hard drive until the question of what to do with the encryption is resolved.
