Encrypted an NTFS drive and am locked out of data

Greetings all. Recently I decided to try the encryption ability NTFS partitions have, formatted, and am subsequently unable to decrypt my drive and access my data. Does anyone have any ideas on how to decrypt and remove permissions from my drive? A colleague mentioned I could put my drive in a linux system and copy the files over that way and it would strip the permissions off the files. I would then be able to format my drive and transfer my data back over. Is this my only option? Thanks.
