encrptyed files on ntfs..

a friend of mine had his drives encrypted.. his boot drive failed, and now he cant read the files on the other drive.. anyone got any ideas how to fix this, or know any faqs or anything? or even if its possible?
 
Andy's idea is great if you follow those instructions ahead of time.
The problem is, no one does. Including your friend I reckon.
If his user profile was on the boot drive the data is all lost, no ifs, ands, or buts.
