updateI've figured out how to rip the songs into MP3 format using EAC, which seems to be using the LAME "engine" for the encoding. Now do I just use nero to convert them to cda and burn them?

I know nero can do this automatically, or am I missing a step?

I'm pretty sure you guys are quite all knowing on this subject matter but sadly I'm not. My gf has a whole bunch of chinese CDs that I'd like to convert to MP3s. But I do not have the know-how nor software to do so. I've searched through the ATOT forum but no hits are coming up that point me in the right direction.

I'd also like to make some custom compilations from her various CDs onto on CD that she can play in her car. I was researching this some time ago but didn't back up my bookmarks when I reformatted. Thanks for your help :)

I second EAC with the LAME encoder. It also will convert back to .wav, which burns as a .cda.

The decoder in Nero isn't as accurate as say Winamp with the diskwriter plugin or LAME (using a frontend such as RazorLAME). But it's a lot easier to just have Nero do it, so you're not missing a step per se. However if you're anal retentive about quality, it would be best to first decode to WAV files and then use Nero to burn those WAV files.

If by compilation, you mean a customized greatest hits CD, then you're going about it the wrong way.

You do not need to encode MP3s to burn them w/ Nero. You just need to rip tracks to .WAV files and then burn an audio CD.

MP3 encoding takes (a little) time and it's a lossy conversion (depending on the target bitrate). If you just want to make a custom audio CD of various tracks from other CDs, you can skip the gratuitous MP3 encoding step.

That's what I was thinking :)

But what if I already have some MP3s that I'd like to convert to .WAV files?
