Encoding Hardware Requirements

There was a topic a few days ago on how much ram needed for encoding.

Right now I'm on an XP 2500+ @ 3200+ with 1GB of PC3200.

I'm encoding AVI to DVD using TMPGEnc. I'm also running Firefox, and have an IRC client open (minimal draw if any).

My Available Physical Memory is hovering around 490 MB (out of 1024 MB), and the System Cache and Page File are at 527 mb.

My CPU is at 100%.

So it seems to me that you should have more than 512 MB, and definately more processor than I have, since it's maxed out, and the ETA for finishing the movie is 9 hours :Q

that kind of thing always maxes out a cpu. You should just let it go when you arent around or when you are asleep. either that or get a dual cpu machine, which would be a waste of money imo.

How have you set up TMPGenc..............by this I mean the PRIORITY level? Try lowering it to free some resources................and...

.....have you configured your services (from services.msc) and killed all the stuff in your toolbar (esp AV and software FW's) to speed/free things up?

By the way TMPEnc is slow compared to CCE or MainConcept.

At the mo your RAM or CPU is not the problem.

I only tried this out because my buddy just got me a DVD burner, and I wanted to learn to burn a playable dvd. I'm not going to do any serious encoding or burning, and probably not even casual use either. I have exactly 2 dvd's in my collection 🙂

Besides what I listed above, my motherboard is an Asus A7N8X E-Deluxe and a 9600 Pro.

As for more ram, 490 MB's of ram was not being used at all, so I think as long as you have over 512, you have enough. Unless, of course, I am erring in my understanding (entirely possible).

I didn't change the priority level, but I noticed I could still surf and talk on IRC with only the slightest occasional burp. I wouldn't try playing a videogame though (obviously)

In the morning, it was done, and it was only about 7 hours since I posted. I don't know how long it actually ended up taking.
