Encoding an AVI using TMPGEnc

I downloaded some AVI videos from my digital camcoder using firewire. I encoded them using TMPGEnc, burned them to a CD and sent them to my family. Everyone was unable to play them because they didn't have the correct CODEC installed.

I choose the encoding I did because it yielded the largest video resolution.

Can someone help me choose a CODEC that is readily available, easily installable and results in a large resolution for the video? Thanks.

DivX, go with 5.0.5, or pick 5.1 if you have a CRAY to render the video... (DivX 5.1 is awfuly slow.....)

TMPGEnc does a very good job encoding AVIs. In fact, I use it to encode the DV that I get from the digital camcorder.... VirtualDub is unable to handle the DV.

You touched a very good point about giving videos to the family..... I do the same, but EVEN if I include the codec in the CD they complain they can't view it, no matter the amount of readme files thay say they have to install the codec first..... In some cases I gave up and give them MPEG1, that plays even in win98 machines without the need of an additional codec.

If you gave them the video as MPEG2, they should have a DVd playter installed.

I like divx 5.0.3. But as was stated some people tend to have problems playing them.

give them the ffdshow filter and they'll never complain about any (well most) .avi movies.

What is the ffdshow filter?

I thought that TMPGEnc was a MPEG encoding program. Just make VCD, or even SVCDs and ppl can watch them in their dvd players.
