I have a laptop (exclusively) and I'm looking into buying a dual layer DVD burner...only problem is I don't want one of the slim ones that fits inside the lappy, and don't want to pay out the nose for an out-of-box "external" drive

So my question is, is there something along the lines of an external enclosure for an internal drive a la hard drives? EG I bought an IDE hard drive and a USB2.0 enclosure for far cheaper than it would have been to simply buy an external drive; is something like this possible for optical drives?

Thanks

Yes. Check newegg for a 5.25" enclosure. There are external DVD burners that's comparable to the DIY cost, however.

I have this one with a Liteon drive and it has no problem with 16X burns. Check cdfreaks for their discussions on which enclosure works best with which drive.

Only suggestion I have is that you dont buy the cheapest one you can find... not too expensive, im talkin like $30.

the extra $10 will likely save you a lot of time in the future.
