I picked up this game on Friday, and I played a total of 15 hours over the labor day break. Level 20 baby! Here is my review so far.
Presentation/Story Line - 5/10
... Its not the greatest. It's your typical RPG storyline. Young male with unknown powers saves the world. Its plain, but has the common japanese style twists.
Characters - 5/10
What surprised me the most was the characters. They are balanced and fruity, literally. There is a gay character and he is definitely gay. He wears a shirt that shows his entire lower stomache, he talks with a lisp, and he says some funny gay stuff. If your entertained by that type of stuff, its worth a play for that alone. Aside from him, I think the characters are balanced, designed, and expressed well. The main character is a bit on the slow side. This is very original, I've never seen a non-smart main RPG character. Most main RPG characters are the smartest of the smart! This guy is the dumbest of the dumb y0! Straight silly! Overall, I feel the characters could have been developed a little better.
Sound - 6/10
-Sound Effects
Very good, not cheesy at all, has punch and umf, I think they did it well.
-Voice Acting -100,000/10
The voice acting absolutely terrible. It is the worst I have EVER seen. I turned on the japanese audio and it makes the game more tolerable, but I turned it back to english because I hate reading. The dialogue isnt so bad, but the voices... OMG, they are horrid.
-Music
Its good, your typical RPG style. It flows well, is designed well, not annoying even though its playing the same tracks over and over. I think the sound they nailed, except for the voice acting.
Graphics - 6.5/10
For being on a " next gen " console, the graphics arent the greatest, nor are they the worst. They are just.... average, and almost boring at times. The game has some new effects, especially the lighting/bump mapping, but in general, its just decent. The battles show more eye candy compared to the landscape and scenery. I was expecting more visual pleasure dammit!
Fun Factor - 6/10
It's ... OK.
Conclusion
If your looking for a decent RPG game for your 360, this is the one. It has the elements a good RPG needs to be worth playing. Sound, storyline, graphics, game features like online playing, mini games, etc. If your expecting a Final Fantasy rival, you will be very disappointed. If your just looking for a decent RPG to pass time, this is the one.
My Final Rating
5/10
