hey. i got an SMC barricade 4 port router not too long ago and since im now behind the firewall that comes with it and all the NAT stuff, i cant serve my songs on IRC, send pictures with aol instant messenger, run a counter strike server or, any kind of server for that matter. i saw something about "special applications" in the router admin where certain apps can have control over this but, i dont know what ports to put in exactly. basically, can anyone tell me how to do this, or what exactly DMZ is and how to get it to work? id like to be able to serve again. heh, sorry im a little new to managing a LAN. i appreciate everyone's time! -dave ?

You have to find out what ports that an application will use and put that port or port range in you configuration screen.
Otherwise the router is doing its job blocking the apps.

If you want your computer on the outside of the firewall capabilities of the router you put it in dmz mode.
Your computer will be wide open just as if you didn't have a router and were directly connected to the internet.
But any ap will work without any configuration.

Just click the dmz check box and click reboot in the configuration screen and its done.
