Enabling DMA causes problems, but I need it for DVD! Help!

I just recently bought a Pioneer 16X slot load DVDROM and I'm eager to watch movies in my room with it. Unfortunately, enabling DMA causes Counter-strike to run slow and makes my DVD programs crash the system at random times. Disabling it fixes the crashes and sluggish performance, but then DVD playback is very poor. Is there any fast way of fixing this? Thanks.

Which IDE drivers are you using? In my experience you have to use the VIA drivers for stable IDE DMA useage, so make sure you are using the VIA drivers. If you are using the VIA drivers, re-install the latest version and make sure to check the "enable DMA" box in the drivers setup box. After doing that, check Device manager to see if DMA is enabled.

I remember when I enabled DMA on a gigabyte MB for a plextor burner and then restarted the machine, the drive didn't show up on Windows explorer thereafter. I had to reinstall my OS to get everything back. it was a major pain.
