enabling component video out

hey all.. don't know much about video component out on graphics cards, so i thought i'd ask. i want to setup a music/video computer to hook up to my tv. my friend has a vid card with component tv out, so i was going to plug that into a video input on the tv. my real question is whether i can simply do that and immediately use the tv as the "monitor", or will i have to use a regular monitor first to configure the card/comp for tv out? thanks
