Enable Second Monitor Without Rebooting (Windows XP)

There must be a way to do this without restarting. I have a projector hooked up as my secondary monitor, and if I don't turn it on before turning my computer on, it doesn't show up in the Display Properties. I can access it through the nVidia drivers, but I can only do a clone, which doesn't work well since my monitor and projector aren't the same resolution. How do I make the display properties realize I have two monitors without rebooting?

Any other suggestions on this? I'm having the exact same issue, except with a TV (don't want to keep it as a second monitor all the time). The second monitor shows up in the Device Manager, but not in the Display Properties. Tried redoing the drivers on the Device Manager, etc., with no effect.

I don't have an XP box to play with right now. I CAN tell you that Win7 (and Vista, as I recall) had no problems with this. As soon as I turn on my third monitor (a HDTV on a second PCI-E video card), my two other monitors dim for a second and the Desktop properties now show the third display, already set up as an extended desktop with my custom resolution settings.
