I wanted to try out Nvidia Purevideo on my 7800GT. I don't hear much at all about this decoder but I wanted to try out some of the post processing effects and better decoders out there. I've heard of stuff like DScaler that can make the DVD playback quality much better but I have no idea past that.

Anyway, so installed PureVideo trial and loaded up MPC to play a DVD (I don't think I have any video files in MPEG2... they are MPEG1, Divx, Xvid, or x264, none of which Purevideo does anything for AFAIK). There was suppose to be a PureVideo icon in the system tray when it is running. Nothing. I could not find a single reference in MPC or ffdshow about anything Purevideo. So I'm unsure how to enable it in MPC to use it for decoding DVDs or other MPEG2 video.

So I heard about the MS tool that can verify if Purevideo is installed correctly. Had to get the damn WGA plugin just to get the tool, then get the tool. DEC tool says PureVideo is installed and is the preferred decoder.

So that 20+ minutes of messing with it and I don't even think it's working. Any ideas? I couldn't find anything in the PV Manual since it just assumed that the icon appears in the system tray.

Disable MPC's internal MPEG-2 transform filter. During playback, go to menu Play - Filters and all the filters in use are shown and their configurations can be accessed (seperate tray icons should be redundant). If Nvidia's is not then add it as an external filter and set to prefer (alternately add any other external MPEG-2 filters and set them to block). Either method is better than messing with merit. If also using ffdshow then disable its MPEG-2 decoding from within ffdshow.

Ok... Last night before I seen this message I was in MPC Options at External Filters. There was a huge list, and like 5 Nvidia ones. None specifically said Purevideo. One was like Nvidia Decoder, and Nvidia Video Decoder, and a few other ones. But I'll try the ones sounding most like they would be Purevideo later today. Thanks.

Did you find it?

One way to find the correct listing is to disable the ones mentioned and then any other which may then become default as shown in the filter list during playback. Sometimes, even a single DS filter file can have several listings due to different functions so only one is correct. Graphedit will also show the corresponding name.
