Enable optical out on GTXP?

I have a hercules Game Theater XP and I want to use the optical out from the breakout box to the optical in on my surround sound sub/receiver, only thing, I switch the sub input to optical in and change my sound card output config to digital outputs (tried main and power dvd) and for the life of me I cant get it to send from optical to the sub, I can use RCA fine no problem, but this optical is p!ssing me off. Anyone have any ideas?
