Enable AHCI with 150 Rapto running on Bad Axe 2?

I'm running an Intel Bad Axe 2 (D975X BX2) mb with a WD 150 Gb Raptor using BIOS default: Enhanced IDE. As I'll be re-installing the OS shortly (from RC1 to retail Vista Home Prem) I'm considering setting up the Raptor as AHCI, thinking I will improve performance. The system is home / small business oriented, no gaming.

Has anyone had experience enabling AHCI with this mb / hd combination?

What are the pitfalls to look out for?

I understand that a third party (Intel) driver is required to be loaded at the start of windows install process, but that's about the extent of my knowledge on the subject.

I would appreciate ANY & ALL input on this.

Thanks

i wanted to do this as well, but cant' find an AHCI driver for Vista... the system boots fine in IDE mode, but just does the eternal reboot when switching to AHCI

although, in Vista, I have a performance checkbox enabled on the harddrive

I have the same setup here...BX2 and Raptor. What you have to do is load the AHCI driver with F6 during the Windows install off of a floppy. Also, you've gotta set AHCI mode in BIOS before you do the install. After that, you're good to go.

so the XP driver works in Vista???
also, can you convert to AHCI if you accidentally setup in IDE mode?

This I do not know.

Also, I'm pretty sure there is a way to load the drivers in XP if you didn't install them using F6. However, I'm not 100% sure how to get that working, if all that is involved is simply installing the correct drivers in Windows then enabling AHCI in BIOS.

Does enabling AHCI and getting NCQ really translate to that much of a difference? I thought NCQ only really helped in multi-user environments.

i think some testing has been done to show 10-15% improvements under certain loads...

Where did you obtain the AHCI driver from?

Highly recommended off in a single user environment, thanks for the link 🙂

Wont have to worry so much about getting AHCI to function 😉
