Emulating LAN over the internet

Hi,
I hope someone can help with this.
Does anyone know of a way of connecting 2 computers over the internet(either manually or using a piece of software), whilst fooling them into thinking they are on a LAN (IPX).
The scenario is as follows. Myself and a friend, who lives 300 miles away, both have cable modems (from different network providers). Whilst some games are no problem, allowing you to type in an IP address and connect, some require you to be on a LAN to have multiplayer games. These sort of games were simple to fool when using dial-up, but I can`t work out what to do now we are both on broadband. (We are both using Win98 BTW).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm not too "up" on networking, but I think you might want to look into VPN (virtual private networking). I'm not sure if it will emulate IPX, however. VPN is designed to allow secure "LAN-like" connections over the Internet.

Good luck!

I agree with bigjon that a tunnel is probably your only option.

However, there are several different tunnel types, and I think VPN only caries IP.

DLSW would carry Netbeui traffic, but requires "real" routers.

GRE, Short for Generic Router Encapsulation, will carry multiple protocols, but is only supported on "high end" routers such as Cisco and juniper, to my knowledge.

PPTP, or point to point tunneling protocol is Microsoft windows PC to PC. I'll try to find out if this supports IPX and re-post.

Good Luck

Late on the enter key! Good to know it works! :}

Are either one of you using a router? This may have an effect on what you can or cannot run.
What games are you trying to play? Could you possibly use a third party site like heat.net, mplayer, or gamespy to initiate the game? Just a thought.
