Emprex is owned by BTC.
The drive is a BTC 1016IM or 1116IM.

I would also recommend taking it back and getting an NEC or BenQ or Pioneer instead. :D

while are discussing "off brands" .. ..
i had a $40 credit at OM so i spent $50 on a Digital Max 16x "DVD 'everything' " DVD+R DL . .. . it IS a LiteOn (DRW 3S163)
(i liked the idea it came with Nero 6 . . . my first two DVDs were coasters until i updated Nero . . . now it burns ok)

acceptable?

LiteOn (DRW 3S163) should work ok for 8x burning on some discs, but 16x DVD writing quality is bad. :(

thanks . .. i guess it is "good enough" . .. . i am having no problems with DVD-R at 8x (the 16x media was expensive where i got mine)

i imagine DL writing is pretty slow also . . . . the media is too expensive anyway

Slightly OT, i just backed up ALL my current files this laast weekend - to install Win98SE on a second partition so i could play System Shock2 - went without a hitch using Partition Magic . . . .

anyway i used TWO [full] DVDs (SL) . . . . the LAST time i backed up [last year] i used 3 CDs!!!

:p

I got a 'emprex' BTC 1016IM for my mediacenter pc and it performs on par with my other workstations NEC 16X 3520. The only noticable difference is it is 'slightly' louder when burning/reading cd's, but that is only because the NEC is wisper quiet.

Haven't tried DL's with it, but 16X media burned fine with no noticible Pi error differences with my 3520. Seems to be a solid drive.

nec loves generic media code leaddata 01 aka silver top UV, housebrand
burns great at 8x, its 4x media
tried this on liteon 812s and it sucks even at 4x
strange isn't it, even hardware likes different type of media just like people who either hates banana or loves banana
the same media that burns great on nec, gives me coaster on a different type of burner
