I picked this drive up a couple of weeks ago at frys when it was $99, and it has been great. A bargain at 79. Been using memorex and it burns at 4x no problem.

Anyone know who makes this drive or if it is a rebaged something else? Im suprised not more people are interested in this. The drive seems to work well, and it it the cheapest 4x dual dvd burner i have seen without any rebate or coupon hassles.

I'd be all over the 8x version, but it only burns -R at 4x (as of two weeks ago). I don't know if there's a firmware update coming down that will fix that or not, but I'll hold off until then (save up more money for more media).

Oh, I've burned more than 75 disks so far, and the only coaster was one that the software messed up (copied the wrong files to the disk).

This is a rebadged BTC DVDRW 1004IM.

BTC (and Emprex) offer firmware updates to support more media with a Windows loader, but you can get the (IMO, less buggy) dos update from the BTC Europe site, by emailing support.

The first one I bought was a POS, the second is working fine after a dos-load firmware update, for some reason the windows-flashed drive wouldn't read certain CDs.

Make sure you use 80 conductor (ATA-66) cables.

Club CD-Freaks BTC Forum has more about the drive.

I had issues with this drive until I flashed it with the latest firmware. It's been solid ever since.

gg, what intereface were you using on the enclosure? also, did you have a chance to use it internally? just wondering if there was any benefit (speed wise mostly) when burning with usb 2.0 or firewire

thanx in advance

I picked up this drive yesterday, the Emperex (BTC 1004) and updated to the latest firmware. (049) I have tried GQ brand (Fry's cheapo brand) 4x DVD-r's and DVD+r's for data discs and both have been working flawlessly at 4x, as well as my TDK 48x 80m CDR's. The GQ's were on sale at Fry's as well for $25 for a 25 pack of either the + or - 4x's. Good deal.

I'm using Nero 6, not the Roxio software that comes with the drive.

This is no $70 or $20 Lite On 8x deal like at OM, which is probably why it isn't getting much attention, but solid none the less.

It also doesn't require a metric buttload of rebates to get the deal.

For perspective, Fry's has the Emprex 8X +/- DVD burner (model DRW 1008IM) for $69.99 each. The black bezel is included free inside the box along with Roxio 6 software. UPC 7-53622-09009-5 and the date of manufacture was 2004/03. The box lists technical support at www.allsupport.net for the USA or www.visionarea.com in Europe. June 08 is the last day of the current $69 sale here in Seattle.

It may be a cheap drive, but Sony should have this company print their dual layer dvd burner boxes as those look pretty cheap compared to the Emprex box.
