Depends what you got canned for then.
if reason = (embezzlement || harassment)
{
your.ass(pwned);
}
else
{
probably not an issue;
}

Here's the deal:
A background check most likely will not pull up any of your past employment history. The Background checks that I do are strictly criminal, however, I, and other employers, can easily pull credit and educational background checks if needed.
That being said, here's a caveat, and I'll use my company's application as an example:
We have 4 spots in our job history section for an applicant to indicate past job experience. We specifically ask to enter in the most recent and go back in chronological order.
In your case, say this job that you got fired from is job #2, but you "omit" it on your appliation. If we hired you and at a later time found out that you knowingly "omitted" a previous employer we would have every right to, and most likely, terminate you. Not because you didn't tell us that you got fired from a previous job, but because you knowingly LIED on your application.
Just my 2 cents...

Well what if there were companies I used to work with 8 years ago but I lost their contact information?

wouldn't that raise a red flag? "oh look he listed a company he's worked for before... but he doesn't want us to contact them. hmm, looks like he must've been fired..."

What type of job are you potentially going to get that is causing this question? I think your answer will depend primarily on where you might work to determin what type of "background check" they may do.
