At my work, most of the people have p2's with 64 megs of ram. There is so much virus scanning and other network software that the machines take 3 minutes to boot fully, about 7 minutes just to log onto NT. So, do the math and it costs them over 800 a year for me to wait for the computer to boot. Seems to me like it would be beneficial for them to upgrade.

You get paid $57.14 an hour?

(130 working days - 10 holidays) log in once a day = 120*7 = 840min / 60 = 14 hours 800/14 = $57.14 an hour

Here's a dangerous, but interesting, technique a friend of mine tried when in the same situation.

He asked the boss if he could pay out of his own pocket to replace his antiquated PC. When the boss asked why he would even make such an offer, he said that he'd be so much more productive, that his performance ratings would improve enough that his raise would cover the cost. Most of what he did was dependent on PC performance and he figured he would smoke the co-workers with a better PC.

His boss was pretty impressed with that, and got him a new PC anyway.

ummmm.....typo I think. probably should be ~230 working days per year. Usually 50 work weeks per year after lets say an average of 2 weeks vacation. Minus your 10 days of holiday leaves us with 240 days, not 130, putting the pay closer to $25/hour.

assume work 260 days a year (subtract 15 for 3 weeks vacation if you want too) so 245
waste .1666666 of an hour each day = 43.3333 hours/year
43.333 x ~20.3 = $879/year

I've considered asking if I could bring in my own stuff. We have old gateways that do have P4s but likley the 533mhz version. However they are, in my opinion, crippiled by having a weak 256mb of ram. What's worse however is the tiny ass 15 inch LCD I have, I can't fit crap on this thing it's pathetic.

I know they wouldn't let me use my own stuff because it would be a distraction. I would have a Shuttle and a 20.1 inch LCD on my desk, it would drive eveyone wild with jealousy!

unfortunately we cant use our own stuff. We are locked into some riduculous support contracts. Just recently they removed the requirement that the company had to install new monitors if we got them. They used to charge 100 to hook one up! They sell us dells for 1300 that retail for about 600, or if we want to use our own stuff they have to test it to ensure its compatible with the network set-up. Rates are insane.
