Employee just informed me that he's leaving after this week

That's ridiculous. He hasn't been here that long, but still, he's got to give me some kind of chance to fill the position.

Bob was never all that good of an employee anyways. His work was sub-par and his ethics lacking. I think it is for the best that he is taking off. Everyone knows you can do his job better than he ever could have dreamed.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if you fixed every problem left on his desk in under a week. Bob will probably end up going nowhere in life, he is a sad little man.

Why does he have to give you a chance to fill the position? If you needed to fire him to save money, would you give him a chance to get a new job? Perhaps, but a lot of businesses don't.

Its a dog eat dog world out there. Deal with it.

Are you that web graphics guy? I thought you worked solo

That was me a few years ago. I still do some odd design and photography work in the evenings, but I am now a partner in company that imports and manufactures cabinet and furniture hardware. I'm a graphic designer by trade, but eventually we have to start earning money.

Of course I would. I would not tell someone he has to leave in two days or something like that.

Doesn't he have to give you at least a two weeks notice or something?

Yes. Pursuant to 18 U.S.C. Section 4501(b), an employee failing to give a minimum 14-day notice of cessation of employment is guilty of are you fucking kidding me?

once a company is going to do layoffs or get rid of someone or a group, they don't give any warning, they just swoop in and BAM its over. They don't want to keep people on after the announcement because of fear of sabatoge, stealing data or other things, etc...

it's rare that they tell you in advance

True, but we're not a big corporation. We're a small company with a handful of employees. We would not do it that way.

But if someone fucks up...do you give them notice that you're going to fire them?

"Gee Bob. Your latest mistake cost us the ABC Cabinet Company job. You're fired...clean out your desk in two weeks."

🙄

I have no problem with giving a company notice...and the guy did that...just not a lot of notice.

If they are incompetent I would not tell someone to just leave at the end of the day. I would inform him that we won't be able to keep him, take away responsibilities and let him leave in two weeks or so. We are dealing with decent people here.
