What is worse for a device to be affected by, lightening or an EMP attack? Like if lightening struck a computer or any sort of electronic device or that same device being subjected to an EMP? The reason I ask is because it seems like it's fairly easy to protect from lightening but I don't know how to have a device interact with the outside world and be protected from an EMP field.

id say its easier to protect against lightning than emp, but lightening is more common(lol)

As far as I understand the difference:

EMP because it actually induces a current in the devise whereas lightning is an externally applied current.

EMP's would probably exist as a result of a thermomuclear explosion so at least your loved ones would be alive to collect on your insurance after lightening gets you.

Grounding > Lightning

Microwave> EMP

but any how EMP is tons harder to protect from. so EMP is way worse.

Lightning, obviously.

Although they would both result in the same thing - fried electronics - if the EMP was powerful enough.

Even a "small" lightning bolt would fry just about anything, though.

Yes an EMP from a nuclear weapon detonated over the US could destroy every active electronic device for most of the nation. Let's see lightning do that!

You can deliberately make EMP bombs, without the nuclear...

They don't work very well, they have limited range and don't have the full range of effects of a nuclear EMP.

True.

There both easy to protect against. For EMP just put a ground plane all around the box you are trying to protect and for lighting a lighting rod will do the trick.

I am more scared of lightening damage.
EMP is pretty easy to block.
The army has a field manual out for it and in it they mainly caution against cables and wires that connect to a pc , not the pc itself. The cables work as an antenna to channel the energy into devices. Most flat circuit boards and things in metal like cars are listed as likely to not be effected.

The big concern is power lines, antennas just swinging in the wind :)
