I think he is one of the toughest, competitive, classiest guys in the NFL. It was great being a Cowboy fan and watching him create history. But I am no less in awe of the Arizona Cardinal who should reach yet another milestone, 18,000 yards, today. I cannot see another back breaking this record for a long, long time. You can have your arguments over who was the best running back in the NFL all day long. But I am here to tell you, I would take the dependable Emmitt Smith before any of the rest.

Congrats Emmitt on a wonderful career

Back in my days of NES Tecmo Superbowl 24/7, Emmitt was my favorite clump of 16-color pixels. I was always way up at the top with him on rushing yards.

Shoulda coulda woulda. He didn't and he won't go down in history as having the most yards. I think Sanders was a fabulous break-away threat, but he wasn't the most dependable back either. He had too many caught behind the line runs that put his team in bad situtations. I would have liked to see him on a team with more overall talent though, I think he could have led a better team to a few Superbowls.

Ya know everyone always says Barry this, Barry that. Yea, Barry was an amazing running back. He was possibly one of the most exciting ever. The guy was only like 5'8 though. Who says he would have stood up to the test of time like Emmitt has? Yes, I know Emmitt is small too, but he's stacked.

Im not saying Barry would have got injured, but it is very difficult for a running back to maintain the consistency that Emmitt has throughout their entire career. Just look at Eddie George, he was awesome his up until the last year or two. Now he's slowed down a lot. He's been beat up to much.

Barry was much better than Emmitt. PERIOD. Are you kidding me? The cowboys had the greatest offensive line for years and years - nice big open holes for him to run through untouched. Barry was on the lowly Detroit Lions! He had to create his yards - and did. I can name atleast 5 O-line players from the cowboys in the 90's and not 1 O-line from detroit. No probowlers on detroits team. I guarantee that Barry in the same situation as Emmitt would have more yards than Emmitt right now and would still be playing. He got tired of being on a crap team. I am a cowboys fan saying this. Emmitt was good but had good teams to help him look great.

The lions were not THAT bad. Infact they made the playoffs multiple times.

If I recall correctly they had one of the best receivers in Herman Moore who in the 90s set a singel season reception record with 110 or something. (It has since been broken). They also had another really good WR, I can't think of his name right now though.

I agree, the Lions line wasn't nearly as good as the Cowboys (hey, Ima cowboy fan too). But saying that you are SURE Barry would have held up to the test of time is kind of ridiculous. None of us know whether or not he would have been able to.

haha I was going to post the same thing. Fact of the matter is, he DIDN'T AND WON'T. I don't ever recall Emmitt Smith having a -6 yard rushing game either, in the playoffs to boot.

emmitt smith and the word classy does not belong in the same sentence. hes an asshole. i live in pensacola, his "home" town. i know quite a few people who went to school with him. he was, and still is, an arrogant prick. he likes to charge kids money for his autograph on the rare occasion that he comes "home". come down here and ask around youll get a feel for how classy he really is.

good running back? sure. class act? fvck no.
