NE1 watching 60 minutes?

I didn't even know that the gov. can force you out of your home and give it to another private owner in order to satisfy their voracious tax appetite :|

Basically, the process is:

gov. gives your land a "fair" market appraisal
gov. makes you sell your land at that price
gov. sells your land to another private owner (ie. home depot)
gov. receives more tax from new private owner than you would ever pay

Eminent domain was never intended to be used for private purposes. But the lust for tax dollars has caused governments to extend it for these kinds of purposes.

Think about that famous story of the person in Atlantic City who refused to sell his house to the casino developers. They had to build the casino around his house. Today, they would just use eminent domain.

Your property is only your property until a giant corporation can convince your local government to use eminent domain to take it from you. This is the natural evolution of what happens when voters don't show up and vote these people out, and keep reelecting the same idiots. The idiots eventually realize nobody cares, so they can do what they want.

I thought they could only do that for public projects like parks and freeways and things.

nope, from that 60 minutes segment, they can do it to whomever they want. I'll be d@mned if I'm ever forced to sell my land so that the gov. can sell it to an @ss who wants to put up a gas station there! :disgust:

We do not live in communist russia.

Unfortunately the US is turning more socialist all the time, whatever's better for the public they say...

What happened to the rights of the individual?!

I know circumstances like laziness, time consuming...etc. deter people from voting. Hopefully online voting will bring newer generations as well as old to come together and vote out these idiots. I'm sure it will make the voting process much simpler as well as more convinient for voters.

Eminent Domain is only supposed to be used for public improvement. Home Depot != public improvement. Hospitals, highways, schools and government buildings are.

But if the government decides that they don't really need that school, they can go ahead and sell the land to the highest bidder - Home Depot.

Think of the average poll here at ATOT. Now think of the same poll, except with no "I don't care/I want to see results" option. Now think of the same process being used to elect our President. Do you honestly think that's a good idea??? Not to mention the huge security/fraud risks.

It's an abuse of eminent domain, as the power was originally intended. But it happens, and it's not hard to see why. Corporate money talks to politicians these days, because politicians need a lot of money to buy ad time on the corporate air-waves to get re-elected. Generally, they want to get re-elected more than anything else. They used to get re-elected by doing right by the citizens, but not so much anymore. Now they get re-elected by taking big-business money, pushing through whatever they ask for, and then using the mass media--for which the limited resources (RF-spectrum) were effectively handed over to the corporate media by the 96 telecom act--to lie (OK, make readily broken promises) to the citizens to get re-elected.

A bunch of houses were wiped out recently, and some other businesses, not very far away from me, not to build a road, or a train, or a school, or or any kind of infrastructure improvement. It was for nothing of any benefit to the citizens. It was land for the new headquarters for the private corporation known as Best Buy. Don't give me the ?creation of local jobs? line. Best Buy already had a local corporate home, only a few miles away, in a different suburb.

The city was after the tax money, plain and simple, human consequences be damned. They made the excuse that the neighborhood they bulldozed was "blighted." In truth, it didn't look significantly different from any other neighborhoods in the particular city when talk of the new Best Buy HQ began. All they did was displace a bunch of working-class homeowners, some apartment dwellers, and a few other businesses.

It shouldn't surprise you that this sort of thing happens when none of us really own our property. Because we have to pay property taxes in order to keep the things we own, we don't really own them. We can never own anything that the government can take away.

yeah i have seen a few bad stories on Eminent domain. one was about a family that was on a farm for well over a 100 years. some corpration wanted the land because it was perfect for the factory. The city came and took it with the righ tof eminent domain. they guy fought in court but lost.

there was a bunch of other stories but that one blew my mind. how they can take a farm that was in a family for well over a 100 years?

here in my town we had a few houses taken over and given over so they can build a mini-mall. its sick.

they should not take a persons private property for a business. grr talk about terroism.

If they ever did this sort of crap to me, I would dump some toxic waste in the backyard. Would wait till after they built their corporate headquarters and then leave a tip with the EPA about the land.

Just remember, there's a reason we have the second amendment. Because at some point the first amendment will fail.

Truer words were never spoken (except by Yeshua HaMashiach). It's only a matter of time before this corrupt government is exposed for what it is and overthrown.

I'm sure the security will be tight. As for seeing the results, that shouldn't even be an option during the voting process.
