EMF shielding? Aluminum foil? WTH?

Stupid n00b "just woke up" question ... grounded aluminum will shield from EMF. Is that a reason behind aluminum cases (besides the heat dissipation factor?)

And if it does - should we all be lining our cases with foil and wiring it into an open ground line to the PS?

A steel case shields just as well against EMI. Don't know about the heat disapation factor, but the case should be lighter in weight, which is a plus.

Yeah, I can't imagine Al being much better than steel at blocking EMI. However, Al should be much lighter which is the main attraction I think.

I don't think that aluminum cases do much of anything to get rid of heat. If there were fins covering the case, like a giant heatsink (good idea😀) then maybe it would dissipate heat. Aluminum cases are nice I hear because they're light, and they can be anodized - I don't think you can anodize steel.

Ah ... I see now. I thought aluminum cases dissipated heat a little better but hey, who knows.

So ... what about aluminum foil (grounded) around IDE cables? Data protection? 😀
