emergency - usb flash drive unresponsive

One of our Senior Vice Presidents has a thumb drive that is no longer responding. When I plug it into a computer, Windows Explorer recognizes that a drive has been plugged when you click on the drive a window pops up saying "Please insert a disc into Drive E:".

Ever seen that before? 😕

Now Windows is reporting no volumes. What software can I use to try and re-create what volume was on there without losing the information? I'm going to load a Linux 'live' CD and see if it recognizes anything on there or even better fdisk can give me some drive information.

linux didn't help much.. it would atleast show a device in /proc/scsi but I could never get any more information out of it, just failed attempts.

If your're plugging into a hub, try going straight to a port off the mobo. Otherwise try a different computer.

If the senior exec didnt click the "safely remove hardware" before he yanked it out the comp, he may have damaged the drive or corrupted the data.
