Emergency PSU Question!

Ok, so I currently have an AMD 1100 processor running on an ASUS A7V MoBo. This is an ATX form factor board.

Well, I just bought a new MSI K8NGM2-FID and AMD 64 3200+ to upgrade my system but looking through the manual and at the MoBo it asks for an ATX 12V power connector which my older Antec PSU doesn't seem to have.

I don't understand, since both boards are ATX FF, shouldn't they utilize the same PSUs??!

Do I need to go and buy a new PSU to power this MoBo and PSU or will it work without the 12V connector?

Thanks for a quick response!

No it will not... The 4-pin ATX12V connector was introduced to feed powerhungry Pentium 4's back then... Ever since, all processors have considerably grown in power needs, and therefore the connector has become a "general" one... I'm afraid you'll have to buy a new PSU... Fortrons are very cheap and very reliable...

EDIT: There exist adapters to transform a Molex into an ATX12V connector... However, if your PSU doesn't sport the connector from the beginning, it will probably not have enough power to let it safely run... Buying could save you a lot of money in this case... 😉
