Emergency problems with computer

I have the following:

Asus A7N266-e nForce 1 motherboard/chipset
1 GIG of Crucial PC2100 DDR SDRAM
1.4 GHZ 266 T-Bird Athlon
IBM 60GXP 60 GIG HDD
Radeon 9800XT
nForce sound
onboard nic

For the past few nights now I've had the computer just shut off on its own. It turns itself off completely. It doesn't bluescreen before it turns off either.

I'm wondering if it's the motherboard or processor that might be causing this? Normally if it bluescreens I'd think it's my ram however it isn't. It just shuts off completely without any type of warning. It doesn't reboot either, it'll just shut down. I'll have to power it back on and it will go into bios saying that bios was messed with.

One more thing I'd like to add. For the past few weeks I've had to run my processor at 1050mhz instead of the 1400 via the bios setting of 100/33.

I just tried switching the fsb back to 133/33 and when it got to the Windows screen where it shows the status bar, it would go for a while then reboot itself.

I alleviated the problem of it rebooting at the welcome screen by taking out two sticks of 256mb of ram. I have one stick of 512 in there right now and it booted into Windows fine. Can I diagnosed/pin point the problem to my memory?

Second update, that did not alleviate the problem. Once back up to 1.4 133/33 in the bios it started doing what it was doing before I dropped it down to 100/33, freezing up completely.

--- Now what exactly could this mean? A friend said CPU. I want to know before hand, before I go and take out some emergency cash to purchase whatever part that needs to be replaced.

Here are some of the temps I got through the bios:

VCORE 1.8V
+3.3V 3.3
+5V 4.4
+12 11.9

CPU temp: 51.5 degrees celcius
MB temp: 34 degrees celcius

Sounds like a bad PS :(

Even though it's a few months old Antec 480W PSU??? :(

If you've double checked every single connection, I'd swap in a new PS just to be sure Nocturnal. BTW, do you have any intermittent issues w/ any of your components such as a DVD-Rom by chance?

Disable automatic shutdown upon crash.

I doubt it is the psu from what you have described.

Oh I just noticed you said Thunderbird. Could also be the processor overheating, causing runaway. What heatsink/fan do you have on that?

I had a very, very similar problem back in 2000 with a Thunderbird 700 on an MSI motherboard. The problem was a bad powersupply (it was an antec), but the power supply also sufficiently damaged the motherboard (before I realized it was the PS) that I had to replace it too.

Right click My computer. Choose Properties. Choose Advanced. Select Startup and Recovery. Uncheck Automatic Reboot.

Now when it crashes you should get a BSOD instead of reboot/shutdown.

Is it clean? Was thermal paste or a thermal pad used?

Thanks minendo. So far I took out my stick of 512mb of PC2100 ram... it's going fine so far. I hope and pray that it won't be my ram. That would suck. But also be good that I didn't have to replace anything.

To be totally honest I haven't re-applied any thermal compound for quite some time.

Give that a try. TBirds have been known for overheating.
