emergency hdd recovery problem

With gratitude to anyone who can help fix this situation......

WinXP Pro
3 seagate barracude IV hdd:
1=OS
2=archive
3=data

System crashed while playing windows media player (!), and on first reboot it would not find disk #3. On subsequent reboots, it would not reboot at all: after Windows logo, I get black screen, nothing further. Safe mode locks screen. Repair console from install cd freezes while checking 1st disk.

I rebooted w/ Mepis, and qtparted found disk #3; at first try it said "partition table empty"; but on second and on subsequent tries it finds all files on disk #3.

Back to Windoze...if I unplug disk #3, system boots just fine.

So, here is my problem: I cannot get Windows to boot with disk#3 attached, so that I can run Chkdsk or any other utility.

Is there a solution?

I do have a cd-r, and can D/L and burn an iso; I do not have a floppy in this sytem.

Many thanks in advance for suggestions !!

Well..if you had a external usb bay I would remove the drive and put it in the usb bay...then boot the system and connect the usb drive after you bootup. Also you may try going to Seagate and see if they have a downloadable diagnostic program that runs off of a bootable disk. If so it would probably have no problems booting from a bootable disk and then run the diagostics from the bootdisk.

Deathwalker, is possible that the registry is screwed up, and a simple install/REPAIR would work? I'm a bit puzzled that linux (qtparted) can read the hdd but windows won't even boot with it attached. (Many thanks for your help!). If I can't fix this today, I will go and buy an external case as you suggested.

Well...lets take a step back here...your bootable drive works just fine if I understand your statement. The system only hangs on boot when your data drive is in the system. As a second though...it is also possible that you could have a bad IDE cable on that drive. Im not sure a repair install is the answer to your problem.

deathwalker, I replaced the IDE cable. Windoze now sees the drive.

Thank you !!!!

(The obvious followup is...why would Linux be able to see the drive, while XP would not?)
