Emergency! Got my P4 with retail heatsink. Sounds like SH*T !!!

Damn, girl! 😉
I thought those retail P4 coolers should be very quiet.

Well, I bought a retail P4 2.26B Ghz, the first CPU since my Athlon 1.4 Ghz. But this P4's cooler is pretty loud! It's louder than a normal case fan, and is MUCH louder than a Panaflo 80mm case fan. It's making an annoying "thin" sound, kinda like whistling. Is this normal?

The CPU was purchased from MWave.com. Did I get screwed or something? Could the CPU+cooler have been bumped during shipping (UPS)? Help me!!!

Well,

The only thing I really have for comparison at the moment, is a 4400rpm Global-win WBK68.

The stock intel cooler on a 1.8a (should be the same...) definately seems quieter; so maybe you got one with hardened grease or maybe an off-balance fin or something silly like that.

t DOES whistle a bit, but I wouldn't say it was to an excessive level...

If it's really that annoying, RMA it!

😉

I have the same cpu w/ retail HSF and mine is quiet considering I have (4) Panaflo 21db 80's in my case. Maybe you got a bum unit.

Would you say that the P4 fan is quieter or louder than a single Panaflo?

This sucks. I, the VB Boy, got screwed again, either by UPS who possibly beat up my package, or by Intel, who used this sucky fan. The fan is made by Sanyo Denki, btw.

I guess I should drop another $40 on this POS PC and get an Alpha 8942 and a Panaflo...

What gave you the idea that the P4 fan was silent?

Just about everybody. Every review of a cooling fan compares it with the retail P4 fan, and most fans are rated "noisier than the retail fan". For example, all fans (except for Zalman in the quiet mode) are louder than the stock P4 fan, according to Frosty Tech. Therefore, I expected the retail P4 fan to be almost silent..

What about a Panaflo, though? Does it move more air than the stock fan?

You'll have to get a panaflo for that.

oh all the people on hear ranting about how quiet it is 😉

Quiet + Low Heat = the only reason I bought a P4. I wanted to get an Athlon XP 2200+, but I remember how hot my Athlon 1.4 Ghz used to get. So y'all telling me that a P4 is not really all that quiet?

I WANT MY MONEY BACK! 😉

Well I have to admit when I got mine I thought it was a bit loud too, but not horribly so. I was actually more disappointed with the cooling prowess than the noise.

I should not talk though cause I made a huge mistake by removing the fan on my video card and installing a blue orb, now that POS is loud.

And once again people go overboard complaining about one thing and praising the other option to excess.

Any way you can put a Panaflow on there? My experience with Sanyo Denki fans is they run forever, do nice on dB meters, but have annoying whining sounds. Rather have someone beating on the side of my house all day with a basketball than a high pitched whine, but well, you know how fanboys are (pun intended).

I'd try adapting a different fan and having fun with your new rig, and remember to take fanboy "information" with a block of salt.

Done. Alpha 8942T + quiet Panaflo ordered. Pretty cheap, yes? $38. KD Computers.

Flat shipping was nice. I ordered a buncha cables and stuff, and the shipping is only $5. Now, NewEgg can learn from that.

P.S. Screw (not literally) adapting another fan to the patheticus stock heatsink. It only looks like it could be used as a depth charge due to its weight 😉 Still, it sucks. I should've saved some $ and bought an A.XP for $30 less...

I will enjoy smashing this noisy fan with a hammer, unless I enjoy smashing the heatsink even more!!! 🙂 Muahaha. I will enjoy watching you die, Mr. Anderson.
