Emergency brake damage?

We were on the freeway and all of a sudden my wife?s Honda Element sounded and felt like it had a flat tire in the back. She pulled off the freeway and I couldn?t see anything wrong with the tires. It would also make a random hard knock as we came to slower speeds on residential streets coming from the back. After about 15 minutes I noticed that the e-brake was on, turned it off and the problems went away. We never use the e-brake we think it was a parking attendant and my wife was driving the care for a few days with the e-brake on.

What damage do you think was caused, was the knocking because it is AWD or something? I haven?t noticed any problems since turning of the e-brake.

Probably just the brake pads engaging the discs as she drove. I am guessing at faster speeds it didn't make much noise, then as she slowed down, they would "grab" causing the sound.

You probably didn't cause much damage beyond wearing down the brake pads, or probably stretching the parking cable a bit...but I really don't know anything about cars, so I could be wrong.

So she didn't notice the bright red parking brake light on in the gauge cluster... and still didn't think anything was up when the car would barely move from a stop?

It will definitely have put a lot of strain on the center differential, regardless of type. As far as breaking anything, if it drives fine with the parking brake off, then you may be fine.

I'd have the rear brakes checked at the least though.

Or that the car squats at the back loads, especially noticeable as you pull off, still noticable as you're driving...

You'd probably get a pulsing feeling when you applied the brakes if they are warped. Notice anything like that?

Why the hell it's called the 'Emergency brake' over there escapes me. Use it in a real emergency and watch the emergency become 50x more dangerous.

The parking brakes are seperate drum brakes on the element, aren't they? It's 4 wheel discs for the regular brakes and then old fashined cable operated drums/shoes in the back rotors for parking brakes, I believe.

If so, then he would have damaged only the parking brakes/shoes, and possibly something in the driveline from the drag.

An emergency brake will work if the hydralic system fails, a parking brake is just security while parking.

My emergency/parking brake is a separate drum brake from my rear disc brake.

You are not incorrect, but there are better nomenclature and uses of said brake in normal driving. However, as you appear to only want an E-fight, no matter what the subject OR forum, I'm not engaging with you.

WTF?

Better nomenclature? As in what the average Joe will understand? I know a lot about uses of the e-brake, parking brake, etc during driving even if I didn't know prior to my 'drifting' car, I get to hear all the stories daily from other drivers.

You are wrong about the fact I only try to fight with people...it's just a lot are very wrong and just because a group of people thinks a certain way...it does not make them right.

I have told everyone, if I am wrong let me know. Most can only go to name calling as they don't know enough about WTF they are talking about to call it. I have also not always been right, but I have always admitted this.

Most will call out a typo though and do the whole *neener neener neener* look you are wrong deal.

It was weird we were on the freeway for about 2 minutes no problem, when we got up to 60 it started, it felt and sounded just like a flat tire . Weird how it didn?t do it all the days my wife drove it to work on the freeway and I was with her one of the times. The emergency brake handle was only pulled back about half as far as it could. What was weird was that when we pulled off the freeway it just made a loud clunky sound at random. So far no sound since I turned e-brake off. I will take it in Monday and let you guys know if it missed something up.

This is one reason I use the parking brake as a habit, then I'll always check it before I drive. Better to reach for it and find it already off than not reach for it when it's on. :(

Let us know what the mechanic says. Hopefully nothing too expensive!

They had to replace the rear brake pads and resurfaced the rotors. Mechanic said the knocking sound might have come from the heat generated by leaving the e-brake on. Also a small leak on the rear differential but he said that has nothing to do with brake issue.

explain to me why you do not use the parking brake? You do know that in an auto P does not apply the brakes to the car, correct? Doing that puts a significant amount of strain on the transmission, which can cause expensive damage, and if you intend to keep this car for a long period of time I recommend you start using that brake.
