Embedded webserver device

For our senior project, we have multiple autonomous testing modules to control from a computer. We were thinking it would simplify software on the computer end and possibly even the device end if we implemented an embedded webserver that hosted a webpage where you could set up the test you wanted to run.

We found an few like the Xport products, but I'm still not sure how you would interface with them. A friend mentioned CGI and some type of a Cprogram layer to interface with the hardware that could be called by the webpage.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

for his senior-year project. (wine cellar)

It was used to remotely monitor presence of bottles, and turn on/off a light remotely. I can't get any more specific since I didn't use it myself.

You could write your own simple web server in C. Most embedded systems have a standard library for C. Then just create the interface.

Or are you looking for even lower level than that?

Well, it looks like we'll just use a basic Ethernet chip with a built in TCP/IP stack and connect using sockets; it'll require PC-end software, but we could use some sort of FTP and Telnet protocols for file transfer and command interface. HTTP just wasn't meant for what we're looking for...
