I have dry scalp so I get dandruff  (anyone else have this problem? please say yes so I can feel better :p). I use Head and Shoulders but I don't see any results. One time my teacher asked me if I had lice or dandruff because I kept on scratching my head. How do I get rid of this problem? and what causes dandruff?

get some exorcise. I used to have bad dandruff this summer. When I started my roller hockey season and actually got sweating, the dandruff went away.

Get some dandruff treatment shampoo.
Nizoral, or the other one.
ASk your doc, pharmacist.
Dandruff is caused by dry-scalp, I think....

hmmi learned from beauticians (cause i went thru a beutician shop in high school exploratory) that dandruf can be dry scalp but it also can be a bacterial infection. not sure how the different typse work, also sure it isn't excess of gel?

it's not dry scalp, it's the opposite - your scalp is producing too much 'fat' so it creates this fungus-like growth on your scalp, which is dandruff.

yeah I have it too  the head and shoulders should work, but you gotta be dedicated doing it. Wash your hair WELL every second or third day in a period of a month or so, or at least until it's gone. Wash it two times when you wash it, ie put in a load of shampoo, rub it in really well (use your nails), then rinse. And repeat.

this should work pretty well to get it out.

Chronic flaker here as well.

Head & Shoulders is a JOKE for my scalp, hell it seems like it makes it worse. Denorhex has been successful for me.

My routine nowadays is to use the Denorhex when things get flaky again, otherwise I just use Pert

Go see a dermatologist. You might have an eczema called scalp dermatitus (sp?) which causes an inflamation to you scalp making it itchy and dry. Have a friend take a close look. Is it red? I'm guessing it is at least a little. A dermatologist can prescribe a topical solution that will clear it up in a week.

my typical hair day goes: I take one shower in the morning everyday with head and shoulder - although I don't really wash my hair too well like prodigy said. and I haven't used any type of hair stuff (gell, mousse(sp), etc) in a very long while (3-4 months).

also, I heard some bad stuff about head and shoulder (or was it pert plus?) that it causes hair loss. is it bad if I use head and shoulder everyday?

wash your hair everyday. worked for me, i keep my hair short and wash it everyday. no dandruff problems for like 3 years so far.

also, i tried some weird shampoo, with mint tree stuff. that stuff was awesome, there was a burning/refreshing sensation to the scalp. this was the turning point to my dandruff, grrr, wish it wasn't like 7-8 bucks for a medium sized bottle, or i would still be using it. :)

that tingy stuff may be a shampoo made by paul mitchell. its some expensive stuff sold through salons. a very nice feeling..try it once and hopefully you wont get hooked on it.

I use head and shoulders (the blue bottle, not the normal strength) and my dandruff cleared away in like 2~3 days.

dandruff is from various sources. dry scalp. fungus infection. snow factory. whatever.

all you have to do is use some medicated shampoo, dont wear too much gel in yuour hair, and wash hair often.

cerebusPu is right, dandruff is not caused by one thing in everybody, so treatment will be different for everybody. Shampoo with ginger extract is recommended (you can get it at the Body Shop, or any of those skin/soap stores)
I have also heard bad stuff about using Head & Shoulders regularly - my theory is that since the medicine in the shampoo is kind of eating away the dead skin cells, if you use it too much when you DON'T have dandruff it could cause scalp irritation and hair loss.
I find that if I wear a hat in excess I get dandruff. I use H&S for one or two days only, then go back to Salon Selectives #2 (extra Moisturizing)

btw the stuff I have isn't really that itchy, and it's more flaky.....it doesn't just drop off like needles on a christmas tree, but if I scratch it a bit, it starts going. I can keep it off with a comb well through the hair though now and then. Just gotta wash it a bit more often I guess.....but kinda annoying with all the mousse, wax, etc. I use in my hair.

okay, i've never had dandruff, but a statement in here made me worried.. someone said they got dandruff when they wore a hat too often? :Q

since last spring, aroundg graduation, I had really short buzzed hair, down to a "1" clipper. since then I've been growing it out to normal length, but if anyone's ever tried to do that before, you know that when your hair is in that "middle" stage, not short, but not long, its absolutely hideous, like a white boy afro sticking up everywhere, its terrible. so I just started wearing a baseball cap like ALL the time when I was out of the house, at school, at work, etc.

now my hair is normal length, but I'm "addicted" to just wearing a cap like I did when I was a kid, dont have to fix my hair in the mornings (I swear every male at my college does the same thing, too lazy).

anyway, I havent noticed any dandruff, but that had me worried

Another vote for Nizoral. I tried about 20 differnt shampoos and none of them worked at all. A year ago I started using Nizoral about once or twice a week and haven't had dandruff since. It's about $14 for an 8 ounce bottle (will last a long time). Best money I ever spent. Damn, I sound like a commercial!

ppl have recommended Denorhex and Nizoral - can you guys tell me the pros and cons of each? the best one should be the one w/ the least side effects (ie hair loss, iritated scalp, etc).

I don't really think there are pro's and con's of each. Both shampoo's are available over the counter (nizoral just fairly recently) so I doubt anything over the counter has any serious side effects.

stress can cause dandruff too from what my gf's mom said (20 years exp.). Some types are inherited as well and nothing can be done about it :(
